Bridgeschool Night 2

killer set from the guys!! I mean around the bend, thin air, lukin, gone, masters of war and TYHD w/ Neil Young. Awesome set wish I was there have to listen to these sets.

first time i ever heard thin air was at bridge, so it was really sweet to get it again at bridge bawled like a little girl lol

It was a long, long day, started late around 2:30 with lots of speechifying. Two songs by neil, then opening folk? act I forget but they were nice and gritty and rocking, then a christian folk band? Dunno I was so pre-baked for the long haul those two first acts where a blur, fun folksy, but a blur. (Stumbling from seats down low to find friends on the grass -- lawn had a good vibe going, lots of kids! Lots of Sun!)

Then Death Cab for Cutie came out and I liked them/him - nice set, laid back but nice. Stumbled back down to my seats for that! But he didn't play my favs....

Trent pretty much stole the show -- he came on as the sun was setting, just ripped open a vein and bled for us. And yes "Hurt" with the string quartet was just phenomenal. Foo was good in acoustic format -- Dave had the whole muppet spaz thang going sitting just wailin on his guitar. Heros and Evermore were great. Solid.

Brian Wilson was an acapella tour-de-force -- little overpowering, I think JT's band pulls that off way better. Some recent stuff then through the classics -- I think Help Me Rhonda and Get Around got the best overall crowd response (to that point -- older crowd, Trent was lost on them). (Forget what Neil jammed with them on but it was doo-wop fun!) Surfin USA, what fun! So crowd was up and dancing by that point. (Yeah I noticed he looked kinda sour at one point....)

Pearl Jam comes out with MoW and that kinda stunned folks, powerful. Chorus of Gone brought 'em back, but then Around the Bend and Thin Air started getting the seats warmed up. Lots of PJ fans to each side but the middle was there for Dave I think. Folks stood up for Lukin and I think it got the eyebrows up, what fun! Dancin for Betterman crowd into it. But not a big crowd sing-along, Eddie didn't trust us to carry the end of Black, but seemed most folks knew it. Hatred was rockin.

Yeah that was neat, Neil came out after Black and was kinda like, "I'm supposed to follow that!??!!?" Think he just kinda muttered, "Awesome" or something... Dave Grohl had mentioned how intimidating it can be to play a bridge, lay down the smack and then walk off stage and there's say Neil and Dylan to pat you on the back... "Good Job, Kid!"

Was clear most folks where there for DMB, think he started with Crash? I dunno he played a bunch of identifiable hits, whole crowd jivin' -- all his jams lasted about 8-10 minutes it seemed. Didn't bring a jacket so his number with Neil was goin on forever and we where freezing so we jet at that point (like 10:30). He definitely rocked though.

Yeah, I think Trent delivered the most out-there Interesting performance, Foo and PJ where solid but not quite the intensity of Trent (Hurt > Black > Evermore). Wilson was a bit over-produced, DCC was nice, would like to see him do a long show after that. And again, DMB was just rockin, probably the 2nd best showman of the night next to Trent.

Got Release and Light Years at SF III -- Black and Thin Air at Bridge, what fun! But yeah, Gone was probably my favorite of the set. Sounded sooooo good!

Hmm. They sounded somewhat spiritual to me, gospel-like in quality. Thanks for pointing that out -- have a few bluegrass albums but mostly pickers. The music was very much enjoyable, wafting through my synapses -- names and introductions and what not ... were not. As a matter of fact I did learn something -- Macallen is damn fine scotch!

I've got some video from the second night. So far I've posted one of Trent (I don't know the name of it) and one of Lukin. I also got Lay your Hatred down with Neil, and one other PJ I think (plus some DMB), but have to resize the videos to meet youtube specs. check back for those.

The Foos were their usual GREAT selfs... Dave Grohl is probably one of the most comfortable artists on stage. The band intros during 'February Stars' was typical Foo Fighter style. The band featured additional players that included fromer Foo Pat Smear, Petra Haden (violin. mandolin, tamborine, vocals on 'Big Me'), Drew on percussion (triangle solo) and Wallflowers keyboardist Rami Jaffee. This is their acoustic line-up, otherwise known as 'Taylor Hawkins and the Amazing Foo Fighters Orchestra'. and how awesome was 'Everlong' after Dave's story about the first time they ever played it acoustic at their first Bridge School?
Trent. I guess the best adjective i can come up with is 'Haunting'. I hope he didn't scare the kids. Simply an AMAZING acoustic arrangement. And the blonde cellist is Vanessa... she plays local L.A. gigs at Molly Malone's and Largo.
Brian Wilson... is was fun. But you do get kind of tired of 'Surfin' U.S.A.' the first gazillion times you've heard it. Could have been a 15 minute set and everyone would have been happy.
Gillian Welch... 'O Brother Where Art Thou' soundtrack. That's where you'lll hear her. I thought she was pretty darn good. Guitarist Dave Rawlings ripped... and ripped through the 'Rockin' In the Free World' finale.
Death Cab... a nice opening set on both days. Great job, guys.
Pearl Jam. What can I say? Put it into perspective and connect both performances and you've got yourself a pretty nice little acoustic show. 'Picture in a Frame', 'Around The Bend', 'Thin Air', 'Lukin', 'Gone', 'Masters Of War', 'Daughter', 'Elderly Woman Behind You Know Where', 'Betterman', 'That Chicago Liquor Store Thing', 'Man of the Hour' (for Marcia) and an amazing rendition of 'Throw Your Hatred Down' with the legend, himself. Nice... I would say.
Dave Matthews Band was entertaining. Love him/Hate him... the fucking guys got skills. Fun music to listen to as you visit with your friends.
And Neil... well, Neil is Neil... nothing else need be said.

Beyond that... The Bridge School, for me, is about solidifying bonds with friends and creating bonds of friendship with others. It's not about staking out a plot on the grass and more about sharing your plot with your neighbors... even if they are there for D.M.B.... it's music from artists who are there for those kids. Because we are all there for those kids... or at least, we should be... well, in the end, I am.
And you can see it in the way the performers on stage are... whether it's Dave Grohl up on the riser playing to them or Ed singing, "Yes, I know you've reached my heart..." to Maricor. It's the kids.
