Any thoughts on the new Kanye? Some good stuff on there, not sure if it's an album I'll revisit often, but has some moments...

Anybody on here listen to Dave?

Hip hop was my first love in music but my interest has waned since the 90s/early 00s. Dave is the first rapper to really capture my interest again in years.

His new album ‘we’re all alone in this together’ is amazing. Some of his lyrics are quite driven by British politics, not sure how well this translates elsewhere.

I was hooked on the psychodrama, such a great record.  Still digesting the new one, but I love the song with Snoh Aalegra (who also has a new record that I really like).
  • So what I’ve been listening to is Monet Bag yo “Time today” amazing song and Bia’s “Whole lotta money”. The Bia song sounds great but  when I finally went to watch the video I wasn’t in to it anymore.

I’m also enjoying Lil baby and Da baby.  Da baby isn’t doing himself any favors in the court of public opinions or being PC as of late.

There is also a new form of gangsta rap out called “Drill”.  Check the genre out.
  • De La Soul rereleasing their albums on vinyl is such awesome news!  I only started getting into them recently and figured I'd never have them on wax.

Saw Talib Kweli and Lupe Fiasco last night, on the birthday-eve of Hip-Hop!  Great show, but I didn't know much of the music.  I know of Talib from Black Star and his few songs with MF DOOM.  I've heard Lupe discuss his appreciation for Aesop Rock, probably my favorite living rapper.

Any Talib or Lupe fans here that can let me know which albums to consider getting?

NPR recently had a post on their socials where in celebration of hip hop turning 50 they ask modern artists to name "the one song that made you fall in love love with hip hop?"

    What's yours??

Mine was 'The Fat Boys Are Back'. It blew my 11YO suburban mind. It was the first time I'd ever heard anything like it and I was immediately hooked.

Good question, but it's hard for me to answer.  I remember being about 8 or 9 and listening to Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique with my older brothers.  I loved "Ice Ice Baby" too and used to sing it to myself walking home from school.  But I didn't listen to much rap outside of radio hits in high school, then heard Wu-Tang's "Reunited" followed by "For Heavens Sake" and nearly lost my mind.

My interest in new hip hop tailed off massively from mid 00’s onwards. But Train of Thought and Quality are amazing albums. Beautiful Struggle was great also if more inconsistent.

Not listened to Lupe for years but I enjoyed his first album when it came out.

Maybe someone here can set me straight on this:

On another music forum, someone posted in a hip hop thread, "Hip hop has been around for so long, I find it funny whenever haters complain about rap today".  I responded by saying that not everyone who does not like hip hop is a hater.  I said I don't care for hip hop but that doesn't mean I hate it.  I said I feel the same way about opera.  I'm not a fan of opera, but I certainly respect the work and don't hate it.

One of the moderators there removed my post and blocked me from posting on that thread for "trolling".

Does that sound like trolling?  I think calling people "haters" is more like trolling.  I was majorly offended by being accused of trolling.

It's difficult to really say without knowing the forum and their guidelines, as well as the exact comment you made, but based on your summary it doesn't seem like trolling.  Maybe they felt offended by your comment for some reason?  Again, hard to say.

Brian a lot of older hip hop heads and performers get on the new ones for not respecting the older artists.  That is one of the biggest reasons for it.

First heard this and added audio version to a Playlist about 6 months ago.  It has been stuck in my head for the last month.  Like a lot of their stuff but this is my favorite of theirs.
