yeah, i only got a few songs in, but it starts pretty strong. certainly better than jay-z's album was. it's been a while since i really dug a new hip hop release. gza's pro tools was solid, and i came late to TI's paper trails, but nas, jay-z, kanye, common... all had pretty big busts for their last albums.

Used to listen to a lot more hip-hop back in the 90s - L.O.N.S., Cypress Hill, Funkdoobiest, NWA, De la Soul, Run DMC, Public Enemy mainly. I seemed to stop listening to hip-hop around the time the first Wu Tang album came out - that is probably the last hip hop record I can remember getting excited about.

I still go back to those guys, but I am completely out of touch with what is going on in this area these days. I can't see the point of Kanye West at all - he seems completely overrated to me. The most exciting hip-hop stuff I hear these days all seems to be from the current generation of British rappers - actually I seriously rate Roots Manuva, and got into the stuff he did with Chali 2na, who I do rate as well.

I was into it in the 80's and 90's when I thought it was good, Run DMC, Eric B & Rakim, Beasties, NWA, Tribe, Eminem, Wu-Tang, and The Roots. But the last hip hop record I bought was Jay-Z's Black Album, they just don't seem that good anymore, I could be wrong, but nothing jumps out like these guys did in their day.

    True that.

no question hip hop used to be great but its still great. Shabazz Palaces have one of the most acclaimed albums of the year. Lil waynes last album was a classic, one of the best of the decade, and he's coming out with tha carter IV supposedly. I think though hip hop music in general right now is taking cues from one individual only and that kanye. I think his last album was a high point in hiphop, and its one of those albums where you are sad you even listened to it, because it puts to shame 99 percent of the other albums out there. Its like seeing Jordan in 1998, or Tiger Woods pre affairs and scandal, someone who is so on top of and on command of their art. Kanye is just the pinnacle of hip hop right now. My Beautiful Dark Twisted was one of the best hip hop albums in a very long time. He;s innovative, a trendsetter, pushing the artform's boundaries.

I disagree, I think kanye is a dope producer, but that doesn't make him a great rapper. Heis not the definition of hip hop and that's what I think confuses people on what hip hop is. The real hip hop is in the underground. Check out psycho realm, immortal technique, crooked I, chino XL etc...
