I hope our vinyl shipped from the 10club store will be thick packaging, like how they shipped their Vault 3, 4 & 5 vinyl.

Tim Simmons said:Unless they build more plants, or stop making stupid records, this issue is here to stay. Shipping issues will improve, someone else will start making lacquers, but production is at full capacity because demand is at its highest in 30 years. That’s the issue that needs to be sorted. This is the new norm until then.
Agree with the repressing, but companies only make what people will buy. They must be selling all those repressings to someone. Originals, or at least repressings that are decades old, are easy and cheap enough to find, so I don’t see the point in paying 10x more for a new one. But someone obviously does.0 -
mace1229 said:I don’t see new plants being built. No telling how long this demand will be high, if they build new plants likely they will be closed again in a few years.0

Tim Simmons said:I disagree with this. Vinyl has seen year over year growth for the past 16-17 years and 2021 is tracking to be even bigger than last year, the biggest year of vinyl sales since the 80s. I do think sales could plateau at some point, but without new plants, opened by the right owners (The more reputable manufacturers), it will kill the market. They are producing at capacity and people are not gonna wait 6-8 months for their record to arrive. Production doesn’t need to be as widespread as the 70s, but increasing capacity by at least 25-50% will let off some of the steam and get us back to an industry with more reasonable lead times for production. We need new plants if we want to maintain its lifespan.0

There are 3 new plants being built right now6/26/98, 8/17/00, 10/8/00, 12/8/02, 12/9/02, 4/25/03, 5/28/03, 6/1/03, 6/3/03, 6/5/03, 6/6/03, 6/12/03, 6/13/03, 6/15/03, 6/18/03, 6/21/03, 6/22/03, 7/12/03, 7/14/03, 10/3/04, 10/5/04, 9/9/05, 9/11/05, 9/16/05, 5/16/06, 5/17/06, 5/19/06, 6/30/06, 7/23/06, 8/5/07, 6/30/08, 8/23/09, 8/24/09, 5/4/10, 5/7/10, 9/3/11, 9/4/11, 10/11/13, 10/17/14, 8/20/160

mace1229 said:Maybe. But that’s still a huge risk to open a plant. PJ couldn’t give away vinyl 10 years ago (almost literally) Riot Act and Avocadp were in stock for years. Backspacer was in stock so long it went on sale for $10- I bought 8 copies at that price to use as decoration around the room. I see vinyl as a fad, people are jumping on the bandwagon. Fads don’t last forever, we just don’t know exactly how long. That makes it a big risk to build a new plant.
I think in a world where we own little media and everything is digital, some people (not a majority of music buyers, but a sizable portion) want something tangible.
Not building more plants is a surefire way to kill vinyl, or at least get it back to its nadir. People will lose interest if they have to wait half a year for records. But yes, its a huge risk, with mediocre margins. But the demand is there. Economics tells us that something will have to come in to satisfy the demand, so there is an upside to opening more plants.
I had another thought. Plants have been operating at near capacity for years now. Usually the delays would be a few weeks to a month if you were bumped in the queue. So this has been an issue for a while and has clearly gotten worse this past year. Something needs to be done.
