Poll--The Weakest Link: BEST SELLING RECORDS OF THE 1980s Round 4

Pink Floyd, The WallOdd to see The Wall winning. Springsteen's record was WAY huger where I was back in the day. But, I guess a lot of you were still in training wheels in the early 80's, right? lol!

The selections he made were were the best selling record of each year in the decade, then go from there. If the point was to choose the best selling record of the 80s, well then it wouldn't be a poll. I'm calling out the singles as an example of how popular the record was/is.mickeyrat said:the poll is on best selling of 80'snot one with most singlesthinking this comes down to age of poster. I was 12 when the wall came out. saw the movie in theaters too. so it was a part of my musical taste formation. which tends to be primarily classic rock. Bruce fits there too, to be sure. just not like PF LZ Jimi etc......
I don't know if it's an age thing or not. BITUSA was a record that was a smash in the pop and the rock world. The Wall is completely different. It's a rock opera with a distinct stoner base.popular doesnt equate to best.poison was popular. milli vanilli was too

Bruce Springsteen, Born in the U.S.A.Simply fucking brilliant!
I've got a little black book with my poems in
Got a bag with a toothbrush and a comb in
When I'm a good dog
They sometimes throw me the bone inI got elastic bands keepin' my shoes on
Got those swollen hand blues
I got thirteen channels of shit on the TV to choose from
I've got electric lightAnd I've got second sight
I got amazing powers of observation
And that is how I know, when I try to get through
On the telephone to you, there'll be nobody homeI've got the obligatory Hendrix perm and the inevitable pinhole burns
Now all down the front of my favorite satin shirt
I've got nicotine stains on my fingers, I've got a silver spoon on a chain
Got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remainsI've got wild staring eyes
And I've got a strong urge to fly, but I got nowhere to fly to
Ooh, babe when I pick up the phone there is still nobody home
I've got a pair of Gohills boots and I got fading roots0 -
Pink Floyd, The Wall
It is genius, but I can't necessarily relate to what's in Roger's head. These lyrics are precisely how I grew up, outside of Cleveland in a fading industrial town where the jobs were leaving. It's a snapshot in time of America. I relate to these..Hobbes said:Simply fucking brilliant!I've got a little black book with my poems in

I've got a pair of Gohills boots and I got fading roots
I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand
Into the bus stop to pick up a paper for my old man
I'd sit on his lap in that big old Buick and steer as we drove through town
He'd tousle my hair and say son take a good look around this is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown
In '65 tension was running high at my high school
There was a lot of fights between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a Saturday night in the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come to my hometown
My hometown
My hometown
My hometown
Now Main Street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores
Seems like there ain't nobody wants to come down here no more
They're closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks
Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back to your hometown
Your hometown
Your hometown
Your hometown
Last night me and Kate we laid in bed
talking about getting out
Packing up our bags maybe heading south
I'm thirty-five we got a boy of our own now
Last night I sat him up behind the wheel and said son take a good look around
This is your hometown

Bruce Springsteen, Born in the U.S.A.Bruce was reporting the external in his way.Roger confessing the internal in his way.I happen to identify with the wall which is why its the stronger of the 2. I feel it as true to me and my experience. that beginningsense of separateness leads to more only drug and alcohol induced separateness. inability to connect._____________________________________SIGNATURE________________________________________________

Pink Floyd, The Wall
That's a good analogy. And I think it speaks to why some people connect so closely with Roger and others with Bruce. When I read/listen the lyrics to songs My Hometown, Growin' Up, Thunder Road, Sandy and so many others, it just shoots me back mentally to my youth and where I grew up. I love Pink Floyd, particularly Meddle through Animals, but it's so cynical that it can be a very heavy burden at times. Bruce is closer to PJ, where you ride the waves between joy, sadness, life, birth, death, etc. It's more real to me.mickeyrat said:Bruce was reporting the external in his way.Roger confessing the internal in his way.I happen to identify with the wall which is why its the stronger of the 2. I'm mostly just kidding. Obviously this doesn't matter. FWIW, I own three different copies of the Wall but only two of BITUSA. They couldn't be any more different.F Me In The Brain said:0 -
