I don't think he realised that the problem was not with festivals happening specifically in the UK... and "no clear reason" ?!

Ed - and the rest of the band have perfect reasoning. I don't like to bring up the past, but God bless those who remember and protect those who don't realize. Lesser bands would do differently -- big ups to Pearl Jam.

Ha, what a fuckhead. The agenda of the music press in this country right now is appaling. If it doesn't relate in some way to the arctic monkeys then it doesn't matter.

And the arctic monkeys are f*cking appaling.

Man, the British music press are ridiculous, and I totally agree, they hype up some pretty mediocre bands.

HOWEVER, while they certainly don't explore any new territory musically, the Arctic Monkeys are far from "appalling!"

They're one of the newer bands that I feel actually have some strong lyrical content to their songs! For a bunch of guys who are barely 20, they've already got a pretty good insight into their own community, and I hope they apply some of that good sense to the world around them as they grow musically!

The songs certainly aren't bad either, which doesn't hurt!

i always give new bands a chance, even (especially) if nme and the like label them as jesus 2.0 but i sat through arctic monkeys tonight on bbc 3, and they are mediocre at best. They are so mediocre. They will not make it to album 3. Muse on the other hand sound different and have something about them, they will live long after the AM have left the building.

What a jerk? No, not really. He also said:

"Pearl Jam rounded off the first day at Leeds Festival with a vibrant mix of old and new material. That sounds rather flattering. Ummming and arrring is nothing new in the world of Ed....so he got called out on it. It's just an article, it's just an opinion/observation and he's entitled.

Yes, he is a jerk actually. Everyone knows why they refused to play festivals for a while, but as someone already mentioned, it wasn't as if they only refused to play European festivals. The article clearly shows that the reviewer hasn't bothered to do any homework whatsoever (if he did he'd find out the real reason and how ignorant and insensitive his comments were). He used his own anti-Pearl Jam agenda to fill in the blanks and put a negative spin on it.

So in summation, yes, he is a twat.

Sure he is entitled to an opinion. And my problem was certainly NOT with this journalist criticizing Ed's ummming and arrring. Hell, a lot of times I think it's hard to understand the man as well...

It's that what Ed said at Leeds was not about "being safe around their US fanbase" or being "afraid to play festivals in the UK". He said something like "It's not guts, playing a festival again... it's trust that you'll take care of each other"... or something along those lines.

So far as I remember, it had nothing whatsoever to do with playing US or UK. And saying that what Ed said has "no clear reason" is not knowing important aspects about the band before you write a review.
Deciding to play a festival is something important for Pearl Jam and if you're a journalist who is going to write about it, you should know why.

I read the article....the very brief, tiny, miniscule blip of a story. I read it....I did not read into it. There's the difference.

For those of you who had the benefit of hearing, reading or seeing something other, heard what the band had to say and have the gaps in the story filled in...good for you. My opinion is based soley on the little blurb I read; nothing else.

The worst criticism I can give this journalist is either give a complete write-up that actually offers some information or don't bother writing at all.
