Must be an east coast thing. Haven’t had Columbus Day off since about 3rd grade. School districts here don’t even give Veterans Day off anymore. Really just MLK and Presidents’ Day, other than the big ones of Christmas and Thanksgiving.josevolution said:

there have been an infinite amount of transgressions against other humans in order for you to exist. you can denounce all of them while still being allowed to live a happy life. imagine being the product of a rape. the child doesn't have to celebrate his biological father just because he gave him life.cincybearcat said:

Forgot about Labor Day, we get that off. Most schools in the state end the weekend before Memorial Day, so doesn’t really apply. But I’m sure we would get it off if school was on.Ledbetterman10 said:

Time to bump this thread seeing how the same old tropes are being tossed out there. Repubs are against immigration, both legal and illegal, unless the immigrants are from white, European nations, because of the threat to their white power structure, all the while exploiting both to enrich themselves. You want to end illegal immigration? Prosecute big business owners that hire them. But be prepared to pay $10.00 for a head of lettuce or two and half times for that McMansion in that fancy schmancy new suburb going up in those cow pastures on the outskirts of town.
Its been proven time and time again that immigration, both legal and illegal, is a net win for the US. As it should be but you still need to hold large agribusiness operators accountable for hiring illegals and treating their employees like shit (living and working conditions, etc.). Increase the number of visas for migrant labor and speed up the process by which they're approved and hold businesses accountable. Immigration reform hasn't happened since 1986. It needs to be bi-partisan but you know, "the other."tempo_n_groove said:

I can remember Bush putting forth regulations for that and then raids happening along the border at Chicken plants. The legislation was supposed to penalize business' for hiring such people. I don't think it was ever enforced though? I'm going off of memory without being a google master here.Halifax2TheMax said:

I also remember having conversations with conservatives that were ok with hiring day laborers that were illegal. Same conversation about them frequenting restaurants that hire cooks and dishwashers that are also illegal. They seemed ok with that too. Where they had heartache, and I do too, is prevailing wage jobs where this happens. It is a big problem in NY where the big residential projects went to non union and the local workers get shut out.
In reality neither side gives a shit about actually coming to terms with immigration policy. Zero bipartisanship is being exemplified.0 -
