i just don't fucking understand this "suspended with pay" bullshit. if I beat up someone at work, fucking hell if I'd be suspended with pay for a fucking year. a year off with pay? PUT UP YOUR DUKES ASSHOLE.
Suspended with pay makes sense for an ongoing investigation. But once you're found to be at fault, its just like free vacation.
there has to be a better way. i mean, on the other side of it, you don't want someone getting zero income and then being found not guilty. but man, there should be a maximum per diem or something that you can live off in the mean time. and then back pay with interest if reinstated. cuz you should not be getting paid for a full year of vacation if the end result is termination.

I agree. In this case the suspension with pay wasn't for an investigation, it was the "punishment." At least that is what I assumed, if it does take a year to investigate this and draw a conclusion then that department has bigger issues.

In other cases, there should be limits on the suspension with pay. Maybe after 4 weeks if you don't have enough to fire the person, let him get back to work, even if at a desk job or something, until the investigation is complete. I would think after 4 weeks in most cases you have enough to know if he followed proper protocol and should be fired or not, even if you haven't concluded a criminal investigation. The standard for firing someone would be a lot lower than criminal charges.

I'm guessing that's a private organization with little risk of accusations. Jobs like police and even teachers need protection. All police shootings should be investigated, but the cop shouldn't lose pay in the meantime. Accusations against teachers should be investigated, but same thing applies. I don't think the typical job needs the same protections that police, teachers and some others do.

Screw that I say cops shouldn’t be paid while investigation is on going, so yes I don’t agree shoot me..they can always pay them retroactive..

    I won’t shoot you, but I disagree.
Most, probably all by now, departments require leave pending an investigation for all police shootings, which can take months. A cop gets ambushed, shot, returns fire. And now while he recovers in the hospital his potential widow deserves to worry about how to pay the mortgage, keep the lights on and buy food for the kids while her husband is struggling for his life?
Good thing those cops who were ambushed several weeks ago and shot in the head in LA were unable to return fire, or they’d probably still be on unpaid leave then.
I wouldn’t have a problem with returning payment if they were found criminally guilty.

Cops should be suspended without pay.  If later they are found not guilty then they can get back pay...

Otherwise the cop and the crooked lawyer will just bleed the system.  Here in Ontario cops are suspended with pay....which is complete BS.

It’s a classic flaw of conservative thinking that leads to that mindset.  Part of the American exceptionalism problem.  Because X could happen or X can’t possibly be avoided it’s best not to try to change anything.  In the case of cops, the exception of “if a cop is ambushed his potential widow shouldn’t have to worry about paying the bills etc”, so let’s not try to find a better solution.  Whereas a much more equitable solution would be to hold the officer accountable until the investigation is concluded.  In the case of extenuating circumstances room for exceptions will be made.  But here in the good old USA we like to pretend that exceptions are the rule. Hence why we have done nothing about police violence or gun control.  The underlying conservative argument in all of these situations is basically something like “no matter what we can’t completely prevent x, so if we can’t completely prevent x there is nothing we can do.” Translated to in this case “ if we make laws to hold cops accountable and it drastically reduces police abuse, some police abuse will still happen and sometimes an officer could be penalized while awaiting an investigation, so let’s not do anything”

So cops and who else "guilty until proven innocent" doesn't apply to?
That's just ridiculous. I'm pretty sure every police dept has an investigation after every police shooting.  A cop can be in the hospital fighting for his life because he got ambushed and shot then returned fire, and you take his pay away until the investigation, which can take weeks or months, is complete? SO while he's fighting for his life in the hospital, his wife and kids lose their house, struggle to pay for food. Makes sense.

This way of thinking totally makes sense in today’s day in age.  Police have become the scapegoat for all the problems with Society in this new WOKE world.  I don’t know how Cops continue to show up to work and lay their lives on the line for such a ungrateful warped society most are faced with on a daily basis, especially in urban areas where they are needed the most.  But you know....BLM

Please enlighten me on what is racist about saying police are needed most  in urban areas?  Perhaps you meant realist.   I’d imagine it would be a policeman’s wet dream for woke society to see what would happen if they were not to actively patrol for a 48 hr period in areas where violent crime statistically happens the most.  We are sort of seeing it play out now in pretty much all the large Democratically controlled cities in America with homicide numbers increasing 30-40% this year....during a pandemic!!!
