Should democrats be supportive of friends and family in the trump cult, who blame liberals for all their problems, think of them as evil and lie about decent people like Biden and Harris?
The challenge for us is, how do you get people out of a cult? When you're fighting a cult you're not just fighting the leaders, but all the enablers who see you as an enemy. “Hate the cult, love the cultist.” #TrumpCult

I watch Bill Maher every week. One thing he said that you do not include:
Remind members of the cult of the people they used to be.
As someone who has members of the cult in the immediate family circle, #1 is super difficult. It is also impossible to convince them of #2. They see me living my life. We break bread together. I'm not evil. I'm not a "radical leftist socialist who eats babies." Yet they can look me straight in the face and with all seriousness make these claims about Democrats.
So, I don't know about this healing. It's a mental illness they suffer from, and that takes a special form of treatment to heal.0 -

(Sorry, I think he’s a smug asshole.)
(And I agree with a lot of his statements against organized religion....think he is spot on/money in what he thinks. He's still a smug asswipe.)

No. Democrats are not evil and not to blame for all the GOP ills, even if it includes standing up for truth with friends and family.Poncier said:Option 3 should be: "Don't watch or listen to a hack like Bill Maher about any subject."Scio me nihil scire

I enjoy the guests he brings on. He is smug at times, and goes off on his pet issues a lot. Some I agree with, some I don't, but I like how he conducts interviews, mostly.
I still think the choices in the poll above contain too much editorializing to choose a straight answer. It's clear where the pollster wants us to go.0 -

So weird....couple things I posted yesterday on a different site
“I feel bad for you guys. I feel bad that such an evil man has taken hold of so many people I assume are really good. I don’t want to believe that any of you really feel the way he does. But most of all I feel bad for the disrespect shown to doctors and nurses who are literally crying everyday and begging people to wear masks. I just don’t agree with disrespecting people who are doing their jobs to keep Americans alive. I just don’t think there’s a good enough reason (unless for health) no matter what party you belong to.”
and....“1976 David Koresh 76 dead Waco
1978 Jim Jones 909 dead Jonestown
1997 Marshall Applewhite 38 dead Texas
2020 Donald Trump 250,000 dead and counting USA”
The only person who can change their mindset is trump and he’s too busy golfing.

why make it personal? Maher is making a legitimate point, even if he might be wrong.0 -

on this topic, I disagree with Maher, but I thought it was an interesting point he made, worthy of discussion. Instead most of the replies were an attack on Maher personally. Silly me for thinking Internet forums may have some merit.0 -
I really like Maher’s show as he will have both sides on and will take on liberals when he feels it’s justified. He gets really good guests from both sides. He does come off as smug at times but I find myself agreeing with his opinions often. As someone said above so think the answer is somewhere between 1 and 2. Some folks are so far down the rabbit hole that just words is not going to change their minds. It will take years to de-program that sector.

Silly me for thinking Internet forums may have some merit.Exactly! That's why I jumped ship here rather quickly. It started off right out of the gate as all rant, no reply to the question put forth. But moving beyond that, I would say Maher makes a good point that is damn hard to follow. I don't think there is anyway someone can argue against the idea he presents which is basically that that deriding and ridiculing someone is no way to convenience them to change. I don't think anyone of us who as a strong feeling about something is going to change our mind because someone says to us, "You stupid fucking idiot! You're so full of shit you don't even know it when your mouth is full of it." I mean, seriously, no one changes their viewpoint because someone says something like that to them.At the same time though, I don't have one freaking clue as to how to convince Trump loyalists how to see things differently. I guess that's mainly because, although I accept that they have a different perspective on things, that perspective seems to me to be extreme and beyond absurd- incomprehensible, really. Trying to change the minds of folks like that would be one damn tough gig and my hat's off to anyone who can do it."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0
