We used to put on boxing gloves and beat the shit out of each other in our front yards growing up.

We’d have tournaments. Neighbors would place wages.

Nobody thought it was strange. It was just kids playing.

    We did the same thing.

One of the neighborhood kids had a couple pairs of 16oz gloves. All the kids (the who weren’t pansies of course) would meet up after school at someone’s house and beat the shit out of each other. Round robins, last man standing, and grudge matches. Those would often just end up being straight up fist fights.

Growing up tin a small, rural town in a neighborhood with a lot of boys, no one thought twice about. Hell, some of the parents encouraged it. Wouldn’t fly today. Different times.

me and my friends were big into WWF as kids. we'd hold wrestling cards on our front lawns. we learned pretty quickly why the ring seemed so bouncy. a suplex on the bare earth hurts like a bitch, even as a kid.

Grew up in a rural town as well and we did punch each other around, although never with mini-boxing matches or gloves.
Would have been interesting.  As one of the smaller kids this would have surely been painful to me, but I was always one of the first kids to toe the line when there was some idiotic contest of toughness.  Sure I would have taken some beatings from the older kids.  Our next door neighbor beat my ass a few times a year without this.  Eh.  Part of being a hammerhead of a young man.  If I didn't fight him back I am sure he would have done it every week.
(I was glad when that jackass moved, though -- he was three years older and far bigger, and was a bully in the traditional sense of the word, not the modern kind who picks on people.  Would not have wanted to fight him a few times a year when he was 17 and I was 14.  It was getting out of control.)

Did you grow up with my husband, F Me?  He too was a scrawny kid. In his Ohio suburban neighborhood there was a big (literally) bully who had his physical takes at many kids including my younger husband. One day the asshole was doing his thing, and my guy just turned around and punched the FUCK out of him.

Never touched him again, especially when everyone laughed  ;)

I think that was just rural America at that time.  I punched Dennis a number of times, but there was not much I did but earn his respect.  A little blood wasn't going to back this dude down - he took beatings from kids at the high school and kept at them too.
Was not quite Corey Feldman from Stand By Me but his dad was a drunk who beat him harder than any kid was likely to.  I did hang out with him at times, but was always wary of when it came to be my turn to face his wrath.
    Oh well!

Anyone play cigarettes? Where, usually an older kid would pin you down by sitting on your stomach, your arms pinned by their knees and they rap on your chest with a pointy knuckle until you could name 10-15-20 different brands of cigarettes. I was up to 30 or so before I figured I had to outrun them.

I also was held by my legs and forced to walk on my hands until my arms gave out and I face planted. This was particularly a challenge when there were mud puddles about. That stuff was fine but if we ever squared up to fist fight or fight for real, all the parents came out of their houses and everyone got grounded. Fighting was only for serious breaches like stealing, stepping in on someone’s girl or offending or picking on their sister.

I like your style. I’d be down for duct tape and crushed glass. Now will this throw down occur in a ring of fire, a large pit in the ground, steel cage, or a trailer park in the Florida panhandle?

Maybe because the Vietnam War had been raging and some kids from the neighborhood didn’t come back and some that did weren’t right after they returned. Or maybe because my parents were members of SDS, were anti-war protest organizers and had FBI files?

    @jerparker20 vs. @dankind charity match?

    Gloves or fists?
Duct tape and bits of broken glass, maybe some thumb tacks?

The people aren't as civilized as they once were.

And the Human Fund needs our blood, sweat and tears.

I like your style. I’d be down for duct tape and crushed glass. Now will this throw down occur in a ring of fire, a large pit in the ground, steel cage, or a trailer park in the Florida panhandle?

Just a matter of time when some husband gets whooped by his wife in front of the kids or a brother gets whooped by his sister when the parents aren’t home that they go for the gun on the nightstand and salve their wounded pride. ‘Murica.

That sounds more logical. We fought over everything.  (Or, nothing....)

Maybe because the Vietnam War had been raging and some kids from the neighborhood didn’t come back and some that did weren’t right after they returned. Or maybe because my parents were members of SDS, were anti-war protest organizers and had FBI files?
Could be any of those things.

  • We did boxing gloves for a while.

We would usually duke it out over sports though.  Made you try just a little bit harder to beat that person.

As for Fight Club?  Why not?  Nothing wrong w someone knowing how to defend themselves.

Agree that fights were around yard football, baseball, or basketball games probably a very high percentage of time.  Too easy to get carried away.

Haha.  In basketball games it was always about foul calls/non calls.  Those could get ugly....

We played strictly blacktop. Fouling was not a thing unless you decked somebody or flagrantly grabbed them or shoved them to the ground.

So when I made the freshman team in high school is when I finally learned that I was not technically a very good baller despite having ruled the blacktop for a good five years prior.

I did not try out for JV next season. That shit was too strict and frankly boring vs. the blacktop.

Funny thing is that I did get recruited to play for my college's freshman basketball team because my college's athletics department (save for baseball and soccer; you know, white kid stuff) was awful.

We called it "animal Ball", lol!  We couldn't play unless there was contact.

Had a buddy that the harder he was hit, the sicker his shot selection was that would go in.  He couldn't score unless there was a mugging.
