Cool your jets, people. It doesn’t say that they are “the same”. It says that all three groups are behind the GOP and all three groups make it difficult to “come together” and “set aside differences” and all of that.Could definitely have had fundamentalist Christian leaders in there with the same implication.my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0

Thanks for symbolically showing us why the D's expected to win the Senate and 15 House seats, but will only end up +1 on the Senate and -4 in the House.oftenreading said:
Nah. There are lots of other groups that could have been included, sure, but there’s nothing incorrect about the placement of those particular groups in the cartoon.mrussel1 said:
I'm saying I think the cartoon is wrong. Those aren't the two sides. Cartoonists can do what they want, but don't expect me or anyone else not to say... meh that's kind of bullshit.oftenreading said:mrussel1 said:
But so are religious leaders, military, some business people, but they aren't represented there. And certainly people on the far left (probably left of actually voting) were part of riots at some level, but that's not represented.oftenreading said:The cartoon shows the police on the side of the GOP, and indeed they are. The National Association of Police Organizations endorsed Trump.
Just how crowded do you want that cartoon to be?
And I don't think the point of the cartoon involved riots. Perhaps you should draw your own.0 -

Ok reread. I’ll agree with you that calling the United States a failed state is some extreme language, but like most of the language in the article I think it is designed to upset and get a reaction and start a conversation. As far as the article being racist goes...nah. My view personally as well as many others of the younger generations is that the oppressed can’t be racist, because true racism comes from the oppressor. Minority populations do not have the power and cultural sway to oppress the oppressor as it were. Is the article highly critical of White people? Yes. Does it draw conclusions on white people as a group? Yes. The main point of this article/opinion piece is in my estimation to point out that everything bad that has happened in modern America has been supported by a majority of the white population. Those of us who are progressive and well meaning overestimate our numbers. Let’s look at Trump/Trumpism through this lens. Donald Trump pulled the majority of the white vote in 2016 and in 2020 grew his majority white support. Is that all white people? No, but it is certainly enough that if you look at the numbers it shows that the majority of white voters support the personality, platform and positions of Donald J Trump e.g. racism, xenophobia etc. I don’t know how we reach out to those people or even if we can, my solution would be to try reaching out to the disengaged white voter and try to organize and educate them. I know we don’t share the view that most Trump voters are irredeemable at worst or just obstinate at best, I hope your opinion wins out and enough people can come out from under the spell and join us. To be sure, time isn’t going to solve this problem for us, nor are any outside forces. It’s going to take some hard conversations within the greater white population as well within our own families and social groups and sometimes even some hard consequences.mrussel1 said:
Well it's definitely inflammatory. It's also pretty racist.static111 said:
Im gonna reread it and get back to you after work. I saw the article as meant to be inflammatory and lead to discussion amongst us white people. After a deeper reread I’m happy to have a discussion.mrussel1 said:
Do you really want to have a discussion about how ridiculous, over the top, and in many cases, factually wrong this paper is? Do you really think the conclusions, particularly that America is a "failed state" are true? Does this writer even know what a failed state is? If he has a different definition than the rest of the civilized world (which apparently my group isn't a part of), then he should share his made up one.static111 said:Scio me nihil scire

The problem is that inflammatory articles only speak to the people on your team. If that's your goal, well great. But if you're actually trying to effect change, it's a failed strategy. And you lose even people like me who are inclined to support that position. If you lose people on your team, well that's not a great result.static111 said:

Regarding the racism argument, to split a slight hair, there are plenty of examples of minority populations being racist and oppressive. South Africa apartheid regime is an easy one. But I am with Dr. King and his perspective on this topic. Plus, if you want 80% of Americans (white people) to move to your argument, calling them a racist isn't getting it done. I'm using "you" in the general sense, obviously not you personally.0 -

again, of course it exists. of course ignoring it isn't going away. but to suggest it's 100% of the force is asinine.Merkin Baller said:

i don't know if the political cartoon was really fair. i mean, you have two obvious racist groups and a cop. that obviously points to all cops as a racist group, which is absolutely untrue.
should they have put a construction worker on that side as well because of the prevailing stereotype of them all being women harassers?Your boos mean nothing to me, for I have seen what makes you cheer0 -
