When a new LP is released, why do they say it is "dropped"?

First of all, don't you go dropping my records- it's bad for them! :lol:

Secondly, I think of something creative/entertaining being "dropped" to mean it is eliminated.

For example:
"In 1998, Dellaventura, starring Danny Aiello, was dropped from the CBS line-up after only 13 episodes." (Which really sucks because it was a cool show!)

I know language is fluid and changes, but sometime the direction it takes seems really lame to me.  "Dropping" a record?  "Needle drop"?  You gotta be kidding!  Dumb!

    I don't think it just applies to vinyl.

    Quite often when a store puts something up for sale it's call a drop.

    Ticketmaster often releases addition tickets after the original onsale date, we call those ticket drops.

    Maybe drop originated from something more sales related than vinyl related?
