When a new LP is released, why do they say it is "dropped"?

First of all, don't you go dropping my records- it's bad for them!
Secondly, I think of something creative/entertaining being "dropped" to mean it is eliminated.

from the CBS line-up after only 13 episodes." (Which really sucks
because it was a cool show!)
I know language is fluid and changes, but sometime the direction it takes seems really lame to me. "Dropping" a record? "Needle drop"? You gotta be kidding! Dumb!
