Cheers to you as well, Conor.

Cheers to all this fair weather Friday!
A rainy Friday here in Ireland. But at least we're used to it! Some years we just don't have summer.

    A fun little Wednesday ditty.

That IS a ditty!  I'd never heard it before.

I'm listening to one of my favorites by Joni.  Where she wrote this for her homesickness, it got to me for the same.  I was 23, staying with family friends in St. Tropez.  Beautiful home, gorgeous environment, the shopping, the meals! ..and all I wanted was to be home.

I heard this while we were driving to dinner and its timing, coupled with my emotions, gave me tears.  She'd nailed it.  She always does.

"California, I'm coming home...will you take me as I am?"

We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you'll do
Though much concerned but not involved
With decisions that are made by you

    True then, true now.

Good tune more like great tune. I really liked that song and I've always loved that band of whom I saw once at the 9:30 Club in DC. I never knew the lead singer was so tall, he's got to be at least 6'5.

Sadly, this song seems just as appropriate now as it did in 1965.

For sure!  This is very sad for me to think about.  I remember when that song came out and how in the late 50's and early 60's I often wondered if we were going to blow ourselves to smithereens in a nuclear war.  And now we seem even closer to living on the edge of the apocalypse.

But then, I have to remember that throughout history people have lived with the fear of impending doom.  The truth of the matter is, death and disaster are always close at hand and the best response to that is to live fearlessly and purposefully, giving the grim reaper all due respect but not to the point of being enslaved by fear.

As a side not, when I was a kid, my father who worked for United Airlines took our family to a celebration event commemorating UAL's first jet service by way of its purchasing of it's first commercial jet aircraft- a Douglas DC-8 which we were able to walk through.  Musical entertainment for that event included the New Christy Minstrels featuring this big, burly singer with an awesome baritone voice- Mr. Barry McGuire.  And Barry is still alive and kicking at age 84!

Interesting...the other day I was listening to The Who and felt such... :anguished: !!! ...at the lyrics of this.  Had enough indeed!

I've had enough of bein' nice
I've had enough of right and wrong
I've had enough of tryin' to love my brother

I've had enough of bein' good
And doin' everything like i'm told I should
If you need a lover, you'd better find another

    Life is for the living
    Takers never giving

Suspicion takes the place of trust
My love is turning into lust
If you get on the wrong side of me you better run for cover

I've had enough of bein' trodden on
My passive days are gonna be long gone
If you slap one cheek, well, I ain't gonna turn the other

    Life is for the living
    Takers never giving

    Fooling no one but ourselves
    Good is dying

    Here comes the end
Here comes the end of the world

I'm gettin' sick of this universe
Ain't gonna get better; it's gonna get worse
And the world's gonna sink with the weight of the human race

Hate and fear in every face
I'm gettin' ready and I've packed my case
If you find somewhere better, can you save my place?

    Fooling no one but ourselves
    Love is dying

    Here comes the end
    Here comes the end
Here comes the end of the world

Great song by John Entwisle. Interestingly, they also have the song called "I've Had Enough" off Quadrophenia:

    I've had enough of living
    I've had enough of dying
    I've had enough of smiling
    I've had enough of crying
I've taken all the high roads
    I've squandered and I've saved
    I've had enough of childhood
    I've had enough of graves

Keeping with the theme: (this isn't quite right as there is no on-line lyrics page that got this one right for to copy and paste and I'm too lazy today to transcribe and besides that, I'VE HAD IT with on-line lyrics pages!  )

"You've Had it With You" by Paul Westerberg

I had it with the friend who uses me
To open doors like I was a skeleton key
I had it with everyone, had it with anyone I ever knew
    You've had it with you
You need someone to fall in love, need someone to fall in love
    Any anyone will do
    You've had it with you

Like Catherine the Great underneath a big horse
Your sexual preference is me of course
I get away with murder and I promise not to hurt her
    If I have to shoot

    Had it with you
    Had it with your shoes..

Had it with you baby and your star-cheap car
I'm fading faster than a UK pop star
I've had it with everyone, everyone I ever knew well I do

You had it with your neighbors, had it with your clothes
You had it with your records, and you know,
You had it with your friend, had it with your shoes,
You had it, goddammit! You've had it with you!

And you've had it with me too...
