That sweet 2000 tour sound is way better I think since he changed back to Yamaha since 2003? I think he used Yamaha and DW in SG when his drums sounded quallity amazing compared to nowadays. I think it's perhaps mostly down to a maple snare?

Not sure about his 2000 kit. I know that he played Slingerland and Ayotte Drums in Soundgarden for a bit.

I'm not a drummer so I can't opine on anything like that, but I've always thought his drums sounded so much better on the Yield and Binaural tours than they do now. Not sure what he had then and whether or not he changed anything, just my lay person opinion.

  • On the 2000 Binaural tour Matt used his Soundgarden Ayotte custom wood hoop kit again. The specs were 6ply shells with reinforcement rings (similar to DW's), with matching wood hoops in Purple sparkle lacquer with a silver sparkle bass drum. Sizes were 12x8, 13x9 rack toms, 16x16 and 18x16 floor toms with a 24x16 bass drum and a custom Ayotte Keplinger stainless steel (3mm shell) snare drum with steel hoops. I have a Modern Drummer magazine from 1999 that documents this kit and actually own the identical set. It's quite honestly the best sounding drum set I've ever played or owned. Unfortunately Ayotte went out of business several years ago so it has been exceedingly difficult to find a set with Matt's specs.
