The NYC thing is a great way to have Cuomo get his way and get rid of guns in ny, which is always interesting to me as NYC has some seriously strict gun laws.
Wait a minute.....are you saying that despite NYC's strict gun laws criminals still have guns? It's almost like they don't care about the laws.

Probably need more. That should help, right?
Of course that was my angle, yes!  More guns would help!

No, my angle is Cuomo has always wanted to irradiate firearms from common folk.
No, no, no. Not more guns, more gun laws.

They really have an effect on the criminal element and criminals follow the laws so well,  we should add more.

If we can turn everyone who owns a gun into a criminal, our problems will be solved.

If hope can grow from dirt like me, it can be done. - EV

When a black president was elected, the solution was more guns. When Obamacare passed, the solution was more guns. When 26 1st and 2nd graders and their teachers were murdered in their school, the solution was more guns. When Team Trump Treason was elected the mantra was, more guns. When BLM protestors started protesting, the response was more guns. When covid-19 hit, the solution was more guns. The NRA declares the AR15 the perfect everyday gun for the average person and of course the response is, more guns. “Responsible” gun owners have solved all of our problems. Maybe they should give every white baby born in America a gun at birth, like a social security number, and task them with solving all of society’s ills?

There was a time, not too long ago that kids did have their hunting rifles in their vehicles, at schools, in the parking lots.

The world has become unrecognizable from those times now.

We don't need more guns either. We need to collectively discuss why murder and violence is wrong. At the family level, school level, in the media, etc.

"More guns" doesn't work. "More gun laws" doesn't work either.

People have to want to stop killing each other and value human life, all of it, regardless of race, age, gender, political affiliations.......whatever.

We don't need more guns or more gun laws. We need more law enforcement and better DAs that actually prosecute gun crimes. Not just shootings, but illegal gun ownership and sales.

20 years ago people were doing this and yes they still carried muzzle loaders but I know you were referring to something much older than that.

    Good comeback.

When I was in high school (90s), a kid I knew brought his shotgun to school and showed the class how to disassemble and clean it for his speech presentation, ha. No one batted an eye.  I’m not suggesting that should be allowed now, just emphasizing your point.  Things changed not too long after.

@Ledbetterman10 Where did you get the 130% increase from? From your post in the Black Lives Matter thread:

Again, as I've told you like four times now without a response.....they're up 130% in NYC.

    From today's NYT (July 15, 2020):

For the year, as of Sunday, there had been 634 shootings in 2020, compared with 394 in same period in 2019.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/15/nyregion/nyc-shootings.html

And where do so many young people get firearms in one of the more restrictive gun cities/states in the country?

    https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/nycs-surge-in-gun-violence-sees-spike-in-kid-teen-and-young-adult-victims/2514840/

Must be because of so many "responsible" gun owners, right?

For the month of June. Got it.

Another “responsible” gun owner. So, what should happen to this “responsible” gun owner? Jail? Fine? Lose his “responsibility?” Nah, just a tsk tsk, a lecture, maybe, and be sent on his way. Part of why I won’t ever step foot in Flo Rida.

If you consider the instance where two "responsible" gun owners were shooting their guns in the Everglades and killed an innocent boater who was struck by a stray bullet, not being prosecuted because they couldn't determine who fired the fatal shot, a prosecution, then sure.

I'm guessing the "responsible" gun owner claims self-defense/stand his ground because he feared for his life and they don't press charges. There were a couple of black men near him, after all.

Just another "responsible" gun owner facilitating gun violence. Or is it exercising their 2A?

A George Mason University student described by federal prosecutors as an “active trafficker of firearms” for his alleged sale of homemade pistols with no serial numbers and devices to convert guns into automatic weapons was arraigned this week in federal court in Alexandria.

Davud Sungur, 20, was arrested in March after allegedly selling eight guns to undercover Fairfax County police officers, court records show. Beginning in January, he allegedly sold other weapons to undercover officers, including three 9mm pistols that he had constructed using parts purchased legally online but that didn’t have serial numbers. Police call these unserialized weapons “ghost guns,” which are legal to own but not sell.

Authorities nationwide have expressed concern about guns without serial numbers, which are difficult to trace. D.C. police said the number of ghost guns they have recovered has soared and such weapons have been used in nine homicides since 2017. Ghost guns have also been used in a number of high-profile shootings around the country, including the 2013 killings of five people in Santa Monica, Calif., by a man prohibited from buying a gun. The District last month sued the main manufacturer of homemade gun kits, Polymer80, for violating the city’s consumer protection laws.

According to an affidavit filed before his arrest in March, Sungur told two undercover officers that he also had a 3-D printer at his home in Fairfax City and was able to make a plastic piece known as a “drop in auto sear” to modify a weapon. The auto sear is inserted into the gun near the trigger to make it fire continuously while the trigger is held down, turning a semiautomatic weapon into an automatic one.

In 1981, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms ruled that auto sears constituted a machine gun part and they were declared illegal. Sungur reportedly told the officers this as he sold them an AR-15-style rifle with an auto sear in January and another auto sear with a homemade 9mm pistol in February, according to an affidavit written by Special Agent Gordon Cummings of Homeland Security Investigations.

Sungur was arrested after an alleged fourth sale to police March 18 and ordered held without bond. His attorneys said in a bond motion that he is a full-time student at George Mason with no criminal history.

Federal prosecutors said Sungur told police that he sold guns to customers around the country. In four meetings with the undercover officers, Sungur allegedly sold three homemade pistols, two rifles and eight commercially made handguns for nearly $7,000, according to court records. When police searched his family’s home near the George Mason campus, they found a 3-D printer and a MAC-11 machine pistol, prosecutors said.

In addition, Fairfax police told federal investigators that while they were executing a search warrant in November related to a murder case, they found an AK-47 rifle, though not the murder weapon, Cummings wrote. The original purchaser of the rifle told police that he had sold the rifle to Sungur, which led prosecutors to believe “the defendant sold firearms to a juvenile and continued to deal in weapons for months thereafter,” according to a filing by Assistant U.S. Attorney John C. Blanchard.

In opposing bond for Sungur, prosecutors also said the Virginia crime lab reported shell casings from the November killing were similar to those used by the homemade 9mm guns allegedly sold by Sungur to police in January and February.

U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady declined to release Sungur on bond.

A federal grand jury indicted Sungur last week on charges of dealing firearms without a license and unlawfully transferring a machine gun, and he was arraigned Wednesday.

One of his attorneys, Peter D. Greenspun, declined to comment on the case Wednesday.

Sounds like he is being prosecuted. What's your issue with how this case is being handled?

I'm guessing here but I assume they prosecute gun crimes in Florida.

There are differences between accidents and crimes.

Careless discharge of a firearm is a crime, particularly when it leads to death.

I agree. Without knowing the details of the case I would also say it doesn’t matter who fired the fatal shot. If they were both involved of illegal and careless discharging of a firearm, they are both guilty.
Maybe the details of the case would explain why they needed to know which one, maybe not. I don’t know.

Because no prosecutor would try a case that they know from the start they can't win.

No proof, no chance of winning......no case.

It really sucks but that's the way it works in our legal system.

It's not like they set out to murder someone, it happened accidentally. Hence the above comment.

I thought part of being a “responsible” gun owner was knowing what is down range? Negligent homicide? Two guys rob a store, not setting out to murder anyone. Gun accidentally discharges, killing someone, maybe one of the robbers. The survivor or both robbers get charged, tried, convicted, do time. In the example I cited, neither were charged. Innocent dead guy, two “responsible” gun owners walk free. Flo Rida.

I have no issue with how it’s being prosecuted. I posted it to counter the narrative, posited by some, that the black community needs to get their house in order to solve gun violence in their communities. You’ve got “responsible” gun owners contributing to the carnage and few want to accept that reality, never mind try to address it in a meaningful way. Wink, wink, nod, nod, NRA.

Who is speaking of murder? There is a large range of other charges that can be laid when an individual causes the death of another person short of murder. Careless discharge of a firearm is just one example.

And this would be an extremely winnable case in many, many jurisdictions, including many states.

"Setting out to rob a store" is a crime and someone getting killed as a result lies on the shoulders of the criminal. I don't have a problem with that.

Stray bullet from range outing? Different circumstances altogether.

I'm not saying that it's right, but it's not as simple as locking up everyone who was there.

OK. There are charges that could have been filed. The chances of a conviction without a known defendant?....not likely.

Maybe we can agree to disagree?

I didn’t say it was “as simple as locking up everyone who was there.” And it was illegal to shoot where the “responsible” gun owners were shooting. Imagine that?
