I heard Byrne immediately. Maybe I haven't listened to enough Bowie, but never really heard him in DotC.

I initially got Bowie when I first heard the song, but now i have Byrne ingrained in my mind.  I keep hearing "Stand back when the spirit comes" over-and-over in my head.

Wait, just the last minute? Maybe more Bowie then, the beginning is definitely Byrne.

You know, after I stared at that sentence, I thought the same thing.  I changed it.

How does that change the take?  Are you now saying Byrne if you think of the entire 4.5 min?

A lot of the focus is on Eddie' voice, but the music is really reminiscent of bands like Hot Hot Heat, The Strokes and Viet Cong.

Well, yes and yes and neither. When you take Remain In Light era TH & Heroes era Bowie & the first 3 Peter Gabriel albums that is what it sounds like to me. The common denominator in those three artists...Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. That was my first impression of DotC.

The music still reminds me of The Who, namely Eminence Front.

Honestly I get Ed but there is a Talking Heads feel to the song. Seeing what the band's ages are, it's not surprising. They were probably the same age when Talking Heads were putting albums out as I was getting into PJ. And your influences always show up in your writing.

Talking Heads influences in the song.  Michael Jackson influences in a couple of lines in the vocal delivery(Ed was/is a fan, listen to Rats).  That's just what I hear.
