Whats the best way to tape a show?

I will be attending Lollapolooza......Im going with my son, hes only 7 and we will be way in the back.....Who knows the best equipment to use and how to get a good quality boot?

    i'd reccomend not taping from the back, just wait. someone will tape it for sure.

    audio or video?

    audio = microphone

    video = camcorder

    if you are looking to tape i know some good equipment if you are willing to spend

    the BEST way to stealth tape a show (IN MY OPINION) is with a DAT. Minidiscs are cool, but only hold 74min? Their set probably wont be that long anyway.
    As for mics, I use these and LOVE them, used them for years!

    Taping is not fun, you will have to stand still and be silent, which is quite difficult for me at a Pearl Jam show... Also, PJ does not allow DATs for some reason...

    The sound is usually pretty poor in the back at festivals so I'm not sure trying to tape it would be a good idea, just go to the show and enjoy it with your son and I'm sure someone closer to the front will have it sorted :)

    there's very decent recording possibilities with HD players (ipod and others) now.
    but you need an external mic.

    Being an impassioned taper of live shows myself i want to offer you the best advice and keep you well informed about all the equipment you will need to get the best results! If you want to take up taping on a regular basis as i do, i'd recommend buying the new Sony MZ-RH1 Minidisc player. You can record 1 hour and 34 minutes of uncompressed audio in CD-quality sound (the best there is) and 7 hours and 55 minutes in ATRAC (the general quality for minidisc players which before was limited to a mere 74 minutes)

    This machine has advanced greatly on the old MD players that recieved critisism for recording times etc and it's so easy to use that there's really no need to explore the bewildering world of DAT. It is pricey but it's the best thing out there to record PJ shows! Obviously you will need a mic and i would highly recommend this one or a similar one in that price range

    The player and the mic are fairly compact and stealthy thus easily kept in a jacket pocket, still picking up good sound. Finally for a rock concert the sound levels are obviously high so you want a module that attenuates the sound and takes full advantage of your MD players full dynamic range (basically it prevents your player from being overloaded) This device has worked perfectly for me and i'd highly recommend you add it to your recording rig

    This may sound fairly complicated if you're new to taping and it's an expensive package overall, but these three items are very easy to use together and get great results every time! The player comes with a USB for your computer so putting the show onto CD couldn't be simpler (i have no idea how to do this using DAT)

    You will need to puchase Sony 1GB Minidiscs (these can also be used for storing non audio data to a disc and are available on amazon)

    I'd also recommend you experiment with it prior to the show, by placing it next to your hi-fi with the sound up high, figuring out the best recording levels and just familiarising yourself with all the features.

    DATs are now a thing of the past. blank tapes have doubled in price due to low demand.

    go with an Edirol R-09. very easy to use. it has built-in mics, but you will want externals if you want high quality. http://www.taperssection.com/ is great for info.
