The chorus in Bushleaguer is sadly wasted

Bad song. Just so heavy handed. I do kinda dig the second, sorta atmospheric guitar and the acoustic break between verses.
Yeah, not the catchiest song, but as a performance art piece, if you will, I give it a 10 out 10.

Both the "Blackout weaves..." and "I remember when you sang..." parts are solid hooks and I find myself liking it more as time goes on...but, yeah, the song is obviously a thing of the past now, as it's not timely.

What if it was sang in the past tense? He wasn’t a leader he was a Texas leaguer, ect.
While I agree in some way it is in the past, many people are still dealing with the horrible consequences from his horrible presidency.

Saw it at Uniondale and man did it create some tension!  I like the chorus but the spoken word fell flat on me. The song seems pretty irrelevant now so I m not sure why they would play it live. I guess if he switched the words up but otherwise let it sit on the shelve. There are   Plenty of others that need to be played more.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Stone said Ed had a fantastic vocal melody for this song that was recorded but scrapped because Ed wanted the spoken word more. Would love to hear this.

Born on third, complained it wasn’t a homer.
    Born on 2nd, stole 3rd.
Born on 2nd, stole the catchers sign.
Called out on strikes, appealed to ump, ump gave him first.

    lol, I tried.

I just don't like the tune.  There were other bands doing much better anti-President songs during that era (Linkin Park actually had a really well written record about the whole deal).

I was in NY for the blackout in 2003.  That was pretty badass.

Ed could just write all new lyrics to it if he wanted, keep everything the same, except the lyrics. Make them about Trump. That would be awesome. But he won't, lol.

Yeah, the guitar part is cool.  I don't think of Bu$hleaguer so much as a bad song as I do a good statement.   That guitar part you refer to (I agree it's pretty cool) kind of serves as an interlude to a piece that seems purposely heavy handed and as oppressive and close as the air in an un-ventilated room on a hot day in the middle of July.

Whose name? Trump's? Maybe not explicitly.... He seems scared to be political these days, which is a little surprising and sad.

Yeah, Ed's just a bench player in the political rock star game these days. He had to take his cues from Bruce last time he got political. So I don't expect anything original from him these days.

I don't if he's ever said his actual name, but he mentioned something like "our current president" or something like that, and he also said that Mind Your Manners was not about him in South America I believe, he's not worth mentioning in song or something of the like.

edit: not mind your manners, can't deny me

    Talk about still relevant.....

I was at that show. That was also the show where he went on a rant about corporations buying up newspapers (lol those were the days), Miller Lite being piss beer, and Sheryl Crow music.

Agree with basic premise of this thread. Great chorus and pre-chorus, and good outro also. No, I don't think they should perform it ever again.
Instead they should write some equally decent songs about our horrible present-day politics.

    Cheers

Yeah, I thought I read somewhere about some drama around ticketing, he mentioned the first few rows the next night. I think it had to do with the advertisers getting tickets upfront. Not sure.

Do people really not know what the "Bush Leagues" are? Do they not get all the minor league baseball references?

You can't just change the lyrics and make it about anyone.

Bush was more classically make-fun-able. Trump lampoons himself and is already a joke so the punchline is already taken.

Baseball is played in like one (1) country in the world. So first, I don't see what would be surprising about people not knowing that.

Second, You don't need the pun in the title to be able to have baseball references

In the end, I'm in agreement with those who who think the riffs are pretty cool, the lyrics are too much "on the nose," and the song is past its time. At least we have access to all those 2003 bootlegs!

The pun isn't even in the song, just the title. So you say the song doesn't work without the title? How many knew the title in 2003, when they played it touring an album that sold worst in their career?

Please point out all the (baseball) references in the song being lost without the pun of the title?

"Born on third, thinks he got a triple" existed and worked before Pearl Jam used it in the song for Bush.

If the song would have been called "Commander dumbass" instead the song lyrics wouldn't loose any meaning or power.
