See something Say something!

I see those signs all over airports , train stations etc etc but not so much at work places .
which brings me to starting this thread , I work at a major hospital here on Long Island in the main OR recently a new employee was hired and to say the least he seems to really be disgruntled and stand offish with everyone totally bad attitude he even had a little spat with one of my coworkers in my dept ..
He hasn’t been heard from in two weeks I talked to one of his coworkers about this person I asked does he own any weapons ? He dated yes he owns rifles/guns now I can’t collaborate this but it really made me think about talking to the director the OR to see if they know any of this info ..
what you guys think should I bring this up with his direct manager ? Thanks for your responses if any ..

If I’m understanding you correctly Jose, he hasn’t been seen at the workplace but you don’t actually know if he’s just on vacation or sick leave or something. If you really don’t know if his absence is routine/expected, then maybe casually just say “we haven’t seen Humphrey in a couple of weeks. Is he on vacation?”  The manager might say “yeah, he’ll be back soon”, and then all is fine. If the manager says “we don’t know where he is, he just stopped showing up”, then I think it’s fair to express concern and suggest that the police be called for a “welfare check”, which basically means they check on a person to see if they’re okay (usually a person who hasn’t been heard from). That’s what would happen in my workplace, anyway, regardless of whether someone had guns or not. If it was someone who had been there longer who had friends on staff, you could go to them of course.

Thanks guys yeah I spoke to one of his coworkers and he stated that no his not on vacation just MIA , this employee had confrontations with a couple of other employees and I’ve never seen him in a pleasant mood always with a growl in his face his father was a director of housekeeping and he was pushed out the door early this year so there’s a lot of issues that could potentially affect him ...

Yes, say something, for sure. Imagine how you'd feel if something bad goes down with him and you didn't say something... Definitely not worth whatever comfort you might get out of not saying something because it's awkward!

Actually reviewing a training on similar situation right now.

Yes - if you think something and there are some signs, I would say something.  The HR org is trained (or will get someone involved who is) in order to help determine if there is a real threat or if there is not.

Do not sensationalize.  Simply state the reasons you are concerned.

I talked to his direct manager last night about this individual, I told him about my concerns about this mans demeanor and stand offish attitude and wether he felt the same way , he said the individual is really a mellow guy not to worry and that he has weapons because he’s a hunter , the only thing I didn’t ask was wether he was on vacation ..

Well, that's all you can do.  And hopefully the manager takes it a bit more seriously than just countering your opinion. Hopefully this manager does know his employee well and has better insight into it.

The only other thing you can do is look up training for dealing with these kinds of situations.  In the US a popular training involves "Run, Hide, Fight".  So you can at least be prepared.

But, you did the right thing sharing your concerns.  I wouldn't overly worry about it moving forward, just remain as vigilant
     as normal.

Hm, well, hopefully this guy is right... I am now thinking about all those comments after every single shooting rampage, where the shooter's neighbors and co-workers say things like, "I can't believe this person would do this." and "He was just a nice, quiet guy."
