I agree with liberty as much as anyone in TX, but I do not believe in neglecting children...which is what not vaccinating is in my opinion.
Funny thing is, I bet any of these people would use antibiotics for every little sore throat, when there has actually been long term studies and scientific evidence that they can lead to future mental health problems and other ailments.
I had a nurse tell me she is absolutely opposed to Cannabis because it has not been studied for 20 years in a lab like pharmaceuticals...that always made me laugh...watch a pharmaceutical commercial and 1/2 the ad is describing the side effects of said drug and many say may cause death...lol

Apples and oranges, though, because you aren't typically looking to cannabis to treat serious or life-threatening illnesses. I am in favour of getting sound data on any product that I would be using in my body, and if I use a pharmaceutical product then it's because I've weighed the potential risks and benefits and have decided to go ahead.

It's an interesting field of study for sure. The evidence is not yet there to say that antibiotic use alone leads to future mental health issues, since it was epidemiological data and not a controlled, prospective study, but it's a fascinating area for future research and certainly antibiotics are overused.
Correct, “leads” was the wrong word to use on my part as more studies must be done to show direct causation, but the evidence is sure starting to mount in that direction.  Gut health should be taken very serious as well as oral hygiene (gum disease has been recently “linked” to Alzheimer’s disease).  Below is the study I was referring to regarding antibiotics.  Interesting stuff:

Yes, that was the epidemiological data I was referring to. The Danes have fantastic population data on all sorts of health and lifestyle issues that can be endlessly mined.

Where I live the local health board employees are in a labour dispute and the school boards have said don't worry about vaccinations until the dispute is settled.  Fuck them.  Kids aren't vaccinated they get suspended.  Quit catering to these idiots...

That's terrible.  Sorry to hear that your Mom had to deal with that.  My Mom, RIP, could not tolerate those anti-vaxxers because she remembers 1st hand what polio was like.  And she always said if people saw 1st hand their opinion would change.

Exactly. Those who minimize the dangers of infectious diseases are those that were lucky enough not to live during the centuries where the average family lost at least one child to these diseases.
    Ahhhh.  The good ol' days.

But seriously, who among us can look at this objectively?  I cannot, at least not fully.  I would be crushed if any of my 16 "kids" died from some disease in infancy.

And yet, looking at it biologically from a biocentric viewpoint, our ability to stymie disease may not be in our own best interest as a species.  That ability is both quite unnatural and probably one the factors that will lead toward our specie becoming extinct earlier than it might have otherwise.   There is a good biological reason for disease and the culling of the weak individuals within all species.   We humans have a very hard time understanding and accepting that.

Oh, for sure, if you look at this completely objectively, vaccinations play a huge role in the human endeavor to completely ruin the world. Humankind has manages to basically halt natural population control altogether, to the detriment of all other species on Earth. If our interests lie with the planet and all the other species over our own, then we should all be anti-vaxxers, as well as be against all foreign aid, etc etc. Unfortunately, homo erectus also seem to have developed that pesky sense of human morality and community and shit, which really gets in the way of taking care of the planet and our own population controls.

but how do you control that? isn't it every species' natural instinct to be as plentiful and widespread as possible? but in most cases, other species or environmental conditions keep that in check. we have no checks anymore.

Right, we have no checks because our intellects and technologies, with the help of our opposable thumbs, have completely outdone nature. It's very unfortunate, technically. And there is no way to control that, only because of that annoying sense of morality we're "burdened" by. Most animals, when the population gets too large for it to be sustainable, will die from disease and famine as they compete for resources until the population is back under control. But people have figured out how to largely overcome disease and famine itself, rather than compete and watch the "losers" die..... And when that isn't happening in certain places in the world, those where resources aren't scarce often try to step in and intervene with medical and food and water supplies, etc etc etc, again, because of that sense of morality (and then there are the horrors, the genocides, etc, which are more about power and greed rather than natural resources, although resources do still play a part in a very inequitable sense, but that never happens on a scale that actually serves to control the human population).

The only way to control any of this is to lower birth rates. Birth control. Which necessarily means education for women and a reasonably equitable distribution of wealth on a global scale. But with that power and greed issue I mentioned, I can't see that happening. So yeah, it's uncontrollable..... Until a really bad pandemic takes care of it.

I think our check will eventually come back in the form of the species no longer being able to sustain itself, whether it be food resources, climate change survival, etc. it will be devastating. I just (selfishly) hope it doesn't happen in my or my kids lifetimes.

If we were to take a wholly objective view of vaccinations we might have to come to the conclusion that in the long run, they are not helpful.  The human species is overpopulated partly because we choose to reproduce widely and partly because we have been successful in extending life through medical means- everything from hernia repair to heart surgery to vaccines.  We have cheated basic Darwinism.  I'm not saying I'm except from this.  Modern medicine has likely save my life a few times.  But objectively speaking, is our ability to cheat death good for us?  Can any of us seriously say objectively, this is a good thing in the long run?  I can't.
This is the cause of so many of earth's problems.  I have no problem saying I'm anti-immigration, legally or illegally.  People need to stay in thier own neck of the woods and start fixing their own problems.  I've had many, many people say Canada is a great big country, we can take in loads ... no, we can't.  Take a look at where most of Canada's population is located.  We are the 2nd coldest country on earth, the vast majority of this country no one wants to call home because of less than ideal weather.  The current government wants to bring 400 thousand a year, and many of these people are coming from countries where childbirth seems to be a hobby...

In Toronto, Canada largest city people struggle to find affordable housing now...Toronto is likely running out of room to expand because there is a protected greenbelt that hinders Toronto ability to expand...

I’m fine with legal immigration and think that those coming here should be evaluated and vaccinated for things like measles and mumps.   I also think it is neglectful to not get a child vaccinated to known debilitating diseases.  Pull up some pictures of polio wards if you do not think vaccinations are important.  Anti-vaxers are nothing short of dumbasses in my personal opinion, on the same level as flat-earthers.

But people have figured out how to largely overcome disease and famine itself, rather than compete and watch the "losers" die..... And when that isn't happening in certain places in the world, those where resources aren't scarce often try to step in and intervene with medical and food and water supplies, etc etc etc.
I think our check will eventually come back in the form of the species no longer being able to sustain itself, whether it be food resources, climate change survival, etc. it will be devastating. I just (selfishly) hope it doesn't happen in my or my kids lifetimes.
It will be a pandemic IMO. We're getting there, with all the antibiotic resistant bacteria and superbugs and whatnot.
Either way, these are some of the reason I won't be having any kids.
Keep smoking that weed then.  It either has health benefits that can save us or at the very least you can get stoned while a pandemic wrecks havick on us...
I don't understand why you said this or why it came to your mind... I don't even know if it's a friendly comment or not, lol.
How did you take that as an unfriendly comment?
"Keep smoking that weed then" isn't necessarily a friendly phrase, lol.
I guess you read to much into it then.  I am 100% in support of Cannabis, not just for recreational, but medicinal as well.  I think it's safe to assume it does not cause harm, it quite possibly is the one supplement that might provide meaningful health benefits...who knows.  Might protect us from a pandemic, who knows...I will continue toking and we'll see.
I didn't read to much or too little. I wasn't sure either way, that's why I mentioned it, lol. I didn't understand where the thought even came from, so I found it confusing. It was just so off topic to me, lol.

but how do you control that? isn't it every species' natural instinct to be as plentiful and widespread as possible? but in most cases, other species or environmental conditions keep that in check. we have no checks anymore.
Right, we have no checks because our intellects and technologies, with the help of our opposable thumbs, have completely outdone nature. It's very unfortunate. No offence was meant.  I cannot ignore the health benefits that I receive from Cannabis, so I am hoping we get to studying this in a lab...should be no shortage of volunteers...and unlike other drugs, they can go right to human trials...

I understand that no offense was meant now, haha.
I'm not sure about Ontario, but BC seems to really be embracing it. UBC is now offering courses and increasing all kinds of research, and some colleges are developing new programs so that people can get educated to be in the industry as well.

It isn’t actually safe to assume it causes no harm. Like anything, they are associated harms as well as benefits. There is research proving potential harms, more so as more research gets completed.  We’ll be getting a much fuller picture in the years to come but it’s unrealistic and ignores current data to day that there are no harms.

I think it has at least been well-established that it's not good for developing brains, which means for people under the age of around 25.
