Barcelona 1996 - Live On 4 Legs

This is going to be next week's episode that we're covering. I know it's probably a long shot to find people who were in attendance for this show, but this show is pretty famous in Pearl Jam lore mostly due to its sound check. Parting Ways 4 years before its release, extended versions of Hard To Imagine and I'm Open. There's some good stuff on here.

If you just so happened to be in attendance that night or vividly remember the release of this soundcheck boot, would love to hear your thoughts on this. Was it a pleasant surprise to finally see Parting Ways on Binaural? Do you wish that I'm Open was more than a 2 minute live track after hearing them soundcheck it for 12? Would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on all of this. Thanks for the help as always!
Hi, I host a Pearl Jam Podcast. We go back to some of the classic shows in their history and break down the entire setlist front to back. From historic perspective, to performances, to setlist construction, to fan stories. We do our best to capture the magic that is their live act and help you relive those memories, or if you weren't there, maybe turn you on to a show you've never heard before.

Live On 4 Legs can be found on Apple Podcast, Spotify and any other major podcast platform. But please support our website and check out the episodes archived there. Oh, and the Concertpedia as well (for you Five Horizons and Two Feet Thick fans, we've picked up where they've left off)

Love that show and the soundcheck. Sorry to nitpick but I interpreted I'm Open and Hard To Imagine as the band played each song like 2.5 times, not that they extended them. Not too uncommon to play a song multiple times in soundcheck. But it was fantastic to get that tape back in the days when rarities really were rarities, as in you had to track down a physical bootleg and not just download away off the internet. And yes it was a delight to play the Binaural CD for the first time and be like "Hey, i recognize this song!"

That’s gonna be a huge topic for debate whether or not they were jamming on HTI. I do think I’m Open was a little overblown when posed to me that it was a 12 minute version, but you’re right. It’s like hearing the song on repeat which is incredibly repetitive to begin with. We actually made the joke on tomorrow’s episode that if they spend 12 minutes singing nothing but “I’m opeeeeeeen” that we’d play the entire track. I highly doubt we’d stick to our word on that.

I would definitely enjoy a 12-minute Hard To Imagine in concert =)

I remember tracking this bootleg down to a bootleg shop on the boardwalk in Wildwood NJ. I think it was $70 for the double cd. Still have it somewhere.

Tape trading!  Maxell XLII's pro, TDK's...

As things ramped up in the late 1990s and early 2000s I moved onto a Marantaz cd recordable deck.  I still have that bad-ass, well worth the investment, but then things really went hyper space around 2003 as bittorrent took off, the days of one for ones or SASEs were rapidly put to an end.

For silly nostalgic reasons I wish I still had the original Barcelona Tape I had, but gosh at this stage I have at least three different versions of this show, Countyman mics, Marc Sounds and a matrix mix of both.

Overall, just a fun set, and I also recall long before we had clear knowledge that Brett Eliason was multi-tracking virtually every show since 1993, that when Smile came out on the Xmas single having that hope that it may one day get the whole show out there as well.

If you have not already gotten on the train yet, and you either love attending shows, love listening to boots, or both this podcast is definitely worth your time and support.  There is nothing more fun in down time with the band than reminiscing and talking shop about shows old and relatively new.   What a great excuse to listen to at minimum one bootleg a week (official or old school).

definitely a cool part of the tape trading days, there were not a ton of soundchecks ever really circulating, a bunch from late October 1993, than a smattering of things here and there, Gormely 1995, Hawaii 1998, Pitt and I think Cleveland 1998.
