PJ used to have incredible jams mixed in. Do you really want them to just rush through the songs and move on to the next? I think we all miss those awesome extended Porch's, RVM's etc. Hell I used to really look forward to the multiple daughter tags you get in a show and now you're lucky if you get more than one verse of ABITW...

I could honestly do without Porch and RVM for a while. They've become so predictable. One ends the 1st set, the other ends the 2nd. Every. Show. When they start jamming in either song is when I go take a piss & grab another beer, or just sit down for a while. I do miss the more creative Daughter tags of yore though.

Agreed. They are not a good enough jam band for that, despite the name, lol. Very few artists can get away with a ton of really extended jams while still holding the crowds complete attention and enthusiasm.

Agree with this as well.

3/29/94 Porch says this band can jam and jam well. Also see St. Louis 2000 for a terrific extended really extended RVM. And 3/6/03 for a "type 2" Immortality. I'll never understand wanting to hear the songs played just like they sound on the albums. To each their own I suppose.

according to SETLIST.com "Comfortably Numb" and "I won't Back Down" were on the setlist but not played for the 6/13 show

I don't want to hear the songs played just like they sound on the albums at all, and PJ doesn't do that whether they jam or not. What I was saying is that PJ can't be a Neil Young or anything like that. PJ's jams are normally pretty much consistent from show to show - there isn't a ton of variation or creativity going on from performance to performance. Sure they've managed to pull out a few great jams - any band that can't do that isn't worth much. But I was responding to the call for them to regularly jam more, and my point was that I don't think PJ can pull that off on a regular basis. Their jamming skills just aren't up to snuff for that - i.e. to create new jams every show and have them actually be enthralling. The band has never shown any of us that they are capable of that.

Looking at it from the "its our job" angle I do not know that many people that could sit at a desk job for 3 hours at 20 years old, and speaking for myself, I don't have the energy to stand in one spot for 3 hours. We are going to both Seattle shows and Chicago, so less time in concession lines.

There have been interviews (links on this board) where band members addressed the show length topic. The 2013 shows were getting out of hand, not everyone in the band was on board with 3 hours + when they're doing 4 shows a week. Some of this may be curfews, some the "new normal." Let's see how it plays out.

No one complained about this in 98 when they had a 70+ song catalog and they averaged 25 songs a night. The shows flowed really well. Energy never waned.

Yeah, well it had to happen eventually. They weren't going to be able to have that kind of stamina indefinitely. Now seems as good a time as any to start scaling it back, before someone starts looking uncomfortably exhausted before the last song. I've been to shows where the artist goes harder and/or longer (that's what she said) than he was really capable of, and it actually turned the show into a bit of a downer. Everyone was worried about them more than they were enjoying the show. I remember Mike Watt did it and everyone seriously thought he was having another heart attack. When he came back for the encore, everyone really just wanted him to stop before he dropped dead.

Im all about vibe and feel and all that stuff. At some point a show probably gets too long.

Most of PJ’s peers played 20 songs a night. Even with that you’re getting your money’s worth

one could argue that '98 was their greatest tour. msg 2 that year might be the bands greatest show ever and it was only 26 songs. I remember leaving the show physically and mentally exhausted.

Call me kooky, but I'll take as much PJ as I can get and prefer 30+ song 3+ hour shows... but of course that's just me, a kooky PJ fan that knows their entire catalog backwards. One of the aforementioned "freaks", if you will (Albany 2006)

Its labeled as an "Evening with Pearl Jam" and they only play about 15 shows per year??? because of these things, I hope 3 hour shows remain the standard

Great tour (1998) with a wonderful balance of songs from their first five (epic) albums. Can't get any better than that, imho!

I hate opening bands at this point, if it's a good band I prefer to see them play their own show in a proper sized venue, not an empty arena with more people in the poster line than watching the opener

I have to agree with this. if they were still playing 60 shows a year then I could understand cutting it back.

I will honestly be disappointed if they don't hit at least 30 songs for the American Ballpark shows. These shows feel more like destinations than just a regular tour.

Also, if they start trimming the set.... the chance of hearing rarities diminish substantially.

and sorry to sound like a whiny bitch, but after 30+ shows, I would rather hear Hold On rather than Betterman.
