Who did rock music better, the Americans or the English?

Just curious what do you all think.
I often think about which country did rock music better.
I'd have to go with the English. So many of the biggest and most influential bands of all time were/are English.
Sure, the Americans started it but the English made it better.

    I typically consider the top bands from England: Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen.

    I typically consider the top bands from the US: Pearl Jam, Guns 'n Roses, Metallica, Aerosmith, Kiss, The Eagles.

    The 'top' bands from each country don't measure up in my mind, but when you delve deeper... I like the depth the US boasts (CCR, Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty, all the grunge era bands, etc.) vs. the depth of Britain (Clash, Radiohead, The Kinks, etc.).

    Exactly. There's also a fella named Jimi Hendrix who people seem to cite as an influence.

    I can't choose and have no desire to. Both have been awesome contributors. If I just score it on how many American bands are my faves vs British, America wins, but only because of math. America has a way bigger population, and therefore a way bigger pool from which rock musicians come from.

    same.  it's pretty even for me.  I like both UK and US artists. although i slightly like US bands more

    Loads of great British bands, particularly in the 60's/70's, but since then I'd give the edge to American bands.

    The british invasion of the 1960's was epic...but some of those american rock bands through years....wow tough call.  I'm going with a tie.

    That's a tough call but I had to go with Americans.  Rock would not have existed were it not for the blues which African Americans created.  All the rock pioneers were American: Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chubby Checker, Fats Domino, Bobby Darin and The Beach Boys. The biggest innovators were Americans:  Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones.  And the best current active rock bands are Americans:  Pearl Jam and Dinosaur Jr.

    I'm from England but I truly love American music but that might be because all the best British acts are just a few years before my time...I love pink floyd Sabbath etc but the late 80s and 90s is my era and as a huge fan of hip hop as well as rock all the best music came from America in that time period

    I have to go quality from the UK and quantity from the US, based on my personal tastes.

    Rock isn't even close to dead. The industry has simply changed. Rock is still alive and well.... Unless you think Rock = publicity.

    I think 60/70's brits were pretty amazing otherwise my taste lean towards american bands

    Ick.  Classic, sure, but corny as hell.
    The British bands took the upbeat tempos of the 50's rock and brought the seriousness of blues back into it, and thank god they did!
