2018 Tour > Facing a Politics-heavy tour (ala 1996) all over again?

As someone who was at the 1996 Charlotte show where the band wallpapered downtown with Jesse Helms "Little White Lies" posters, and brought out Gloria Stienem to speak between sets, I've enjoyed their trend toward minimizing over politics at shows since then. They even address their recognizing fan backlash against overdoing the politics side of things in PJ20.
Obviously with Trump in office, Ed is worked up (as evidenced by the Cant Deny) single... do we see a resurgence of politics-heavy themes/rants at the 2018 Ballpark shows?
Honestly I'm a little worried about it detracting from the experience for many, and possibly distracting the band a bit.

Not worried at all. Bring on the anger.

            I don't think it'll be politics heavy, especially at the ballpark shows. There'll be some moments though.Worcester1 13, Worcester2 13, Hartford 13, San Diego 13, Los Angeles1 13, Los Angeles2 13

I hope it's more like 2004 VFC. Don't even try to hide it. I'm pissed as hell too!

Agreed. Very little was said at the 2016 park shows and Eddie even apologised for bringing "his" name up at Fenway. They may be fed up though and bring it especially at Missoula.SmallestOceans said:I don't think it'll be politics heavy, especially at the ballpark shows. There'll be some moments though.0

2016 was very interesting that they didn’t touch on it much, especially with the heavy political climate: Clinton v. Trump and all the anger it brought. I felt like they sort of recognied how divided/angry/hostile it’s become (which is so sad in my opinion - why can’t people just have a conversation). Nonetheless, I felt like they didn’t want to play a part in dividing even more. I.e. Ed’s comments at Fenway mentioned above. “I didn’t mean to divide us” I think he said.
Anyway - very curious to see how much they dive into it this tour.Boston '06

             LOL! LOL!
Interesting responses. Trump is a dickmitten and I didn’t vote for him, but I guess as an 41yo old fart who works hard every day and is tired of politics bleeding into EVERYTHING (I’m looking at you, NFL/ESPN), it’s nice to have an escape from it for a bit.
Let’s say I guess if i knew i was getting 210 mins with the guys, I’d rather get 3hrs 30min of music instead of 3hrs of music and 30 mins of CNN soundbytes. I get enough of that everywhere else.
 I get they’ve always been political, I’m not new by any means. I don’t mind a bit of venting before a song or two...  but if gets rolling at least that’ll be a good time to grab a beer or take a piss Memphis '94 / Charlotte '96 / Birmingham '98 / Knoxville '98 / Memphis '00 / Nashville '00 / Nashville '03 / St. Louis '04 / Nashville Ryman N1 '09 (EV solo) / Nashville Ryman N2 '09 (EV solo) / Memphis '09 (EV solo) / New Orleans Jazzfest '10 / St Louis '10 / Memphis '12 (EV solo) / Memphis '14 / Boston Fenway N1 '16 / Boston Fenway N2 '16 / Chicago Wrigley N1 '18 / Chicago Wrigley N2 '18 / Ottawa '22 / Quebec City '22 / Nashville '22 / St Louis '22 I don’t mind a bit of venting before a song or two...  but if gets rolling at least that’ll be a good time to grab a beer or take a piss Memphis '94 / Charlotte '96 / Birmingham '98 / Knoxville '98 / Memphis '00 / Nashville '00 / Nashville '03 / St. Louis '04 / Nashville Ryman N1 '09 (EV solo) / Nashville Ryman N2 '09 (EV solo) / Memphis '09 (EV solo) / New Orleans Jazzfest '10 / St Louis '10 / Memphis '12 (EV solo) / Memphis '14 / Boston Fenway N1 '16 / Boston Fenway N2 '16 / Chicago Wrigley N1 '18 / Chicago Wrigley N2 '18 / Ottawa '22 / Quebec City '22 / Nashville '22 / St Louis '22

Couldn't have said it better. Bring the fucking rage. This is a band that has never been known to hold back emotion, or been afraid to speak up when things have needed to be said. Crank up the amps, and let's scream our lungs out till it fills up every room or every stadium in all upcoming cities.Mike D88 said:Not worried at all. Bring on the anger.

2003 seems like the better analogy. Bush and the Iraq War were a central focus of "Riot Act" and the tour in support of it. This was the tour when Eddie was booed at Nassau Coliseum during "Bu$hleaguer." I gather speed from you fucking with me.0

One of the benefits about going to gigs where English isn't the native language is Ed doesn't tend to get into the political side very much. Something to consider if you're averse to him speaking his mind.

I like angry Eddie far more than family Eddie. Sirens and LB are pukatoriums. Get Away and My Fathers Son are the only tracks I seek out playing on that album0

There will be far more people overly upset by politics at the shows than there will be politics at the shows.

Sad but true. Band hasn’t changed it’s political outlook or how vocal they are about it for over 25 years. You know it’s coming, if you don’t want to hear it don’t come to the show or tune it out while you’re there.Anything you lose from being honest
You never really had to begin with.
Sometimes it's not the song that makes you emotional it's the people and things that come to your mind when you hear it.0
