    They (phone companies) are losing the grip on the market so they are trying to do whatever they can to make money.
    This has been building for awhile, and especially the past 10 years.  Cable companies are being antiquated and have a future of blockbuster video.  They have it very good.  Somehow legal racketeering, price fixing, and monopolistic behavior.  They somehow own the exclusive ISP rights... and also worked on getting tentacles out into other things like buying content (such as Comcast/NBC).  

    They have been losing their grip as the proliferation of streaming options has taken hold and our information and technology moves toward that.  They have held on to their sports blackout restriction thread as their last holdout to force consumers into maxing out.  Their only business model is to preserve their monopolistic hold and practices.

    This gives all the cards to the cable companies/telecoms.  They can write the rules now and control the whole industry.  Control the content we can access.  Make us pay for content.  Strategically organize content into tiers that extract the maximum amount of money out of each individual and family.

    In short, Donald Trump and the Republicans can give a shit about you and me and this proves it.
    I remember the FCC getting more power under Dubya Bush and the FCC loosening restrictions.

    Honest answer?  Everyone needs it.

    Its already massive, but before long, Internet is going to be everything.  It already is expanding into all facets of interpersonal communication and entertainment.  Within a few years, we will likely get all our entertainment online, telephone calls, receive news, secure our homes, perform more and more aspects of our jobs, you name it.  You own or start a business?  Need internet.  

    It is a utility, and people/consumers need to be protected against the monopolies.  

    For real, this is the type of thing that makes me consider leaving the country.  We are circling a drain.  Vampires are sucking us dry.

    Yup. The Internet is now a utility, much like electricity and water. It is how other utility meters are read. It is used in security systems. Entertainment systems. Computers, toys, medical devices, kitchen appliances. People use the Internet to find jobs, to pay bills, to perform their work. They call it the Internet of Everything, and connected devices are ubiquitous. The Internet is no longer a novelty or an extravagant nicety. It is essential to being part of our modern society.

    Isn't internet access considered a human right now? Like the others, I definitely think it's necessary, for lots of reasons. That's what makes this decision by the FCC so atrocious.

    Once again, this will screw over tRump supporting states the most.  Washington state is already taking steps to protect net neutrality.  Other progressive states like MN won't be far behind.  Meanwhile, people in Mississippi are wondering what this new-fangled internet thingy is.

    Yes, my employer has thousands of remote employees.  That means they work from home M-F 5 days a week.  This is significantly going to affect our IT expense overhead.

    OK.  I got "throttled" back in 2010 for using too much bandwidth on my phone...

    In 2003 I could pay for higher speeds of ethernet connections.

    In 2000 I could switch from dial up to cable.

    It's been going on for years.  

    Bandwidth is the last big moneymaker for a dying industry but I don't see how they can make a last surge at making billions now?
