It's just sad that all these surfers don't show respect to true legends like MR by coming over and competing in the Mark Richards Pro just as a sign of respect. Money shouldn't be the be all or end all.
If the top surfers came back to compete again, then sponsors would be lining up with their cash, and the Mark Richards Pro would regain it's 5 star ranking due to the large amount of prize money that would be available :(
Surfest is Australia's largest surfing event but it's only the Midori Pro (the women's event) that can attract the top surfers :(
The top ranking surfers though, they have the WCT tour to compete and earn there money, if it was an invitational the story would be different, but since it is just an event that crops up and means nothing to there ratings, they arn't interested. If they got invited to compete it would attract more people i feel. Also April is a break in the tour for them, there is no events in april so they may want to spend time with there familys and what not..

Kelly Slater's always over here the week before Surfest to compete at the Gold Coast and Bells is only 2 weeks before it

Just found out surfest is a WQS event, which is the world qualifying series as opposed to the WCT which is the world championship tour. All the top ranking surfers are on the CT, where as the QS surfers are trying to compete to win a place in the top 44 to compete in the CT the following year, i'm pretty sure they don't allow CT surfers to compete in in QS events, it would be unfair..

That's only because it lost it's CT star ranking (due to poor prize money) and has been reduced to a QS event :(

We used to have all the big names.......Slater, Occy, Machado, Garcia :(
The local women always used to love it when Surfest came along, and the blokes did too because you could walk into a pub and bump into the likes of Kelly Slater (if the women weren't molesting him) :)

I reckoning MR would probably shun all the big name sponors anyway....he's not a sellout...
Wasnt he sponsored back in his days by Lightning Bolt or something, where the big sponsors wouldve been Rip Curl and Golden Breed, perhaps Quiksilver but it wasnt that big like it is now back then.......

That would be a good time to have a meet up in Newcastle when that is on..
Ive been saying for years and years Im going to head to Bells for Easter perhaps it should be a double whammy Bells and Newcastle...:p

Nah.. I think Sean Penn wants to marry Eddie, and Eddie is the reason for his marriage breakup.
