I really love the guitar sounds that Mike Johnson contributed to Mark Lanegan's early albumshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvNRM9j_5yc
I've often wondered, why isn't Richard Thompson more famous than he is? He's an amazing player!

Mine is a little unorthodox but I think Johnny Greenwood is underrated. There's an old PJ article where I believe Ed says that Mike plays the most notes, yet Stone finds the right notes. Johnny finds the right notes and somehow produces other worldly sounds. His playing has evolved with their albums. I think musically he's a genius.Post edited by ledvedderman on0

Not exactly lesser known, but George Thorogood is not taken seriously enough, I saw him live a week after Buddy Guy at the same venue and he could hang with Buddy all night long.Monkey Driven, Call this Living?0

Another, much more recent, Lindley. Blues on an eleven string fretless oud? Insane! I love this guy!

John Butler is worth a mention as well. (It was your 11 string comment that reminded me to post this Brian!)

I've been lucky enough to see the John Butler Trio a bunch of times over the years and Ocean is always a showstopper. It's evolved since he first started playing it, so there's a little something different each time. This is one of my favourite versions, I've lost count of how many times I've played it.
He actually started playing Ocean around 20 years ago when he was busking. Now that would have been something to see...
And if you feel like dancing, there's always this...https://youtu.be/QpnjqYWBcas

I don't think that Robert Smith gets enough credit as a guitarist. I mean, if you had to live with this guy, you'd probably want to murder him for the annoying insect-like noises that are coming out of his amp. But then you hear what he builds out of those buzzes and chirps, and it's just staggering.

I'll never tire of sharing this link -- in my opinion, one of the ten best things on the internet: (same song as ceska shared, I just love that he's sitting in his home or a hotel room or something):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxKTzwaEa2o
