Trumps nominee for sec of education just embarassed herself quite handily. Not only does she hold no opinion on the debate between growth and proficiency., she didnt KNOW WHAT THEY ARE. and ghw bush's sec of ed just called her "the enemy of public education".

    Jesus fucking christ.

i just watched that segment. I'll have to admit, I never heard of the debate between growth and proficiency myself. I'm still a little unclear as to the difference, but I'm guessing i'll know soon.

I suppose anyone in the education field is supposed to know this?
A shot in the dark: proficiency represents how much of a subject matter a student becomes before moving on to the next subject matter, growth represents the breadth of subject matters covered in a curriculum. If time is your exclusive variable, more time can go into fewer topics (more time per subject matter, favouring proficiency), or more topics can be covered (fewer time per subject matter, favouring growth). Even if she didn't know these terms' true meaning, wouldn't she have been better off to look at the simply defined words and apply them to study to see if she could figure them out? From there, you could easily make a solid-sounding statement:

If growth and proficiency are the only two outputs and time is too finite, education should focus on imploring youth to be self-seekers of knowledge. Today, the world is ripe with freely available information, and in an era with such availability, it's a tragedy not to capitalize on that for our most malleable minds.

My proposal is to focus on proficiency, and to re-audit what skills of today, and of tomorrow, are timely and relevant as subjects to thoroughly teach. Beyond that, we need to work on showing not just the value in education, but also ensuring immediate non-audited rewards for the general act of learning on one's own are provided. This may mean encouragement from teachers, extracurricular opportunities in more segments of America, incentives for self-study, all rolled up into a formal program delivered and marketed in ways appealing to youth in an environment producing sensory overload as we see today.

It's not enough to have subject matter experts in adult Americans, if they lack the will, tools, persistence, and keen interest in pursuing lifelong educations.

Wouldn't that have sounded better? Now I'm going to look up the growth vs proficiency debate.

Edit, I was wrong about growth, was more to do with personal growth!
nice shot in the dark, although a bit off. I'll at least say that you are proficient in the art of bullshit (and eloquent writing).

Seriously though, I have mixed feelings about the self learning model. I suppose it has to do with the kind of student I was in school. Some things came easy in grade school and it made me a bit lazy/arrogant when I got to college. I didn't really get to be a good student and self learner until graduate school. so, it's possible i'd be living on the streets right now if you were to throw me into a self learning environment at that young of an age. who knows though...if the expectations are different, than maybe the students rise to those expectations.
Thanks for the backhanded compliment, vaggar :) You're right in this case, I don't want to partake in the art of bullshit and that's exactly what I did, so I'm going to watch myself on that front (even though I did preface my post with the disclaimer that it's a shot in the dark). On that topic, there was a great article I read called "Why bullshit is no laughing matter", and it's really worth reading if you're interested (https://aeon.co/ideas/why-bullshit-is-no-laughing-matter).

I totally understand where you're coming from regarding the lazy/arrogant nature at college - I was the exact same. I regularly received high grades in anything Math and Physics related, and same with English courses. When I started my undergraduate in Engineering, I definitely had to learn about self-learning very quickly in order to succeed.. Winging Engineering Calculus wasn't exactly possible anymore (though my writing abilities were substantially better than many of my peers). I guess my point is that society as a whole hasn't done the greatest job of teaching the value of learning itself - the focus is on the topic at hand, rather than the sale of learning as an asset. Something about the "because you have to" argument doesn't really click for many young people (myself included), but if learning itself was pushed as a gratifying/rewarding experience, it'd be much easier to sell. For example, on this forum, I love reading all these varied opinions which make me want to think critically, research, learn more, ask more, discover more. Discovery really gets my adrenaline going, but maybe that wouldn't be the case for someone less curious.
Studies have shown that males are not suited for the current school model. There are many reasons for this, but the hours of school and their social emotional growth (or lack of it) limit their potential to learn. Simply put... another couple years of free play wouldn't hurt them before they start answering the bell at age 5.

I was an average student who got by on inherent abilities versus application of myself to my studies. It was only later in life, like you have stated for yourself, that I became interested in learning. We're not alone I feel.

"Hey quick, everyone clear off the receptionists desk, let's take a picture of me pretending to write my inauguration speech. All the idiots will eat it up!"

Everything about this cretin is fraudulent.

    Is America great again yet?
Now that's ridiculous. Jesus, he seriously is just stuck in the reality/fake TV mindset. It's crazy. Everything is just a set or a prop. Scary as hell. Maybe we'll get a real life wag the dog out of him.
So weird that he chose such an ugly fucking down home wall for his fake winter White House office too, hahaha.

Purely a coincidence that 80% of resistors are either minority or female.

The point is to make a point that matters to DONALD. Since everyone knows all he cares about is ratings, not watching the inauguration is a really great, peaceful, effortless yet effective way to send him a direct message that he'll actually understand. That isn't ridiculous. I really don't understand how you relate this to honoring democracy or elections or how important a peaceful transition is, nor to loving their country. Boycotting the TV broadcast of the inauguration because of Trump's obsession with ratings has nothing to do with any of those things.
But I know I can always count on you to crap on any kind of peaceful form of protest if liberals are behind it! ;)

He's racist based on his actions, words, and policies that he wants to put into place. Theonly role the media had was printing his words, policies, and descriptions of his actions. Why deny it, is the question.

Regardless, democrats have used race and gender as political weapons long before trump threw his name in.
And republicans have used race and gender as societal weapons to discriminate in hiring, payment for work, loans, housing, policing, sentencing and sexual assault. But let's focus on the "political."

The boycotts of the inaugural by politicians is ridiculous. All we heard about during the campaign was how precious our democracy is and how elections should be honored. Now, when there is a peaceful transition of power between unrelated people (which was a crazy idea back in the 1700's), the Dems are boycotting. I thought they loved their country and democracy. Maybe it was all just a partisan game after all? I get that they think Trump is an idiot.

They are boycotting on the basis of what they we're briefed on Lewis stated that after looking and getting all the facts about Russian involvement he decided not to attend !
Purely a coincidence that 80% of resistors are either minority or female.
Democrats can't help using race and gender as political weapons.

It might have to do with trump being a racist misogynist, too. Again, how long until people stop normalizing trump?
I forgot, he's racist because the media says he is, plus he "effectively" didn't disavow David Duke.
Regardless, democrats have used race and gender as political weapons long before trump threw his name in.
He's racist based on his actions, words, and policies that he wants to put into place. Theonly role the media had was printing his words, policies, and descriptions of his actions. Why deny it, is the question.
    Illegal immigration is racist??
