Joseph Arthur

I love Ryan as much as I love Joseph, but I can't honestly say that I listen to all of his stuff that often (some of it is a little too country for me). He has so much unreleased/leaked music, he's probably more prolific than Joseph. It's fun trying to find it all. And yes, Carnegie Hall is one of the best sounding records I've ever heard.
Joseph's stuff is so consistent though. I really enjoy the poetry and paintings that he posts too. Probably the closest thing to an exception would be the second record of Redemption City - I'm trying not to sound like too much of a fan boy! - but even that sounds great when you hear it on its own, isolated from the rest of his work.“Do not postpone happiness”

I need to give that album another shot. I never really got into it since it's so different than his other stuff.PJ_Soul said:Redemption City is one of my favorites.

It's all a matter of taste. I love both guys. Wasn't looking to turn it into a debate just merely pointing out another prolific artist. Totally respect your opinion.PJ_Soul said:
I like 1989 very much, but it's not his own music. I've listened to a LOT of Ryan Adams because I respect the musical tastes of so many of his fans and basically, I really want to enjoy him as much as those people do, lol. I've found that most of his studio albums don't really do it for me. I mean, they're good, but they don't really have an emotional impact for me like JA's albums do. However, Adams' live stuff is a whole other story. Much better than his studio albums IMO. That Carnegie Hall album, for example, is fantastic.Daron Oshay said:Depends if you are a fan but Ryan Adams is just as prolific

I went to a Joseph Arthur show last night (in Virginia), and it was just awful the whole way through. From his first awkward hello, he appeared unplanned and unrehearsed. His looping equipment was not working properly, so between every song, he was fixing things on the floor with the sound guy and constantly making excuses as to why the songs weren't working. He took audience requests but then he couldn't remember how to play them. He only played two songs from the new album, and not well. It was sad and embarrassing, and I didn't even stick around through the last song because he just gave up on any serious attempt at playing it. ("Miss the Zoo") He just started banging sloppily on the keyboards to make whatever noise he could get out of it. I don't know why he was having such a bad night, but I was really pissed off about paying for it. I hope he works out his issues before the next stop.
He did announce that he will no longer be touring after November because he was offered a corporate job. He would not elaborate on the corporate job, but he went off on a long monologue about this being the beginning of his Going Out Light Tour. He basically said he can't keep on touring, that it's too much at his age. We'll see how that pans out.
It was an unexpectedly bizarre and disappointing evening.0 -
That stinks, especially the part about him taking a corporate job! I've seen him a bunch, definitely seen him have off days before, but what you described does sound awful. I don't see him surviving without music and art being his focus, but it's gotta suck living in New York without a steady income so I get it.what dreams said:I went to a Joseph Arthur show last night (in Virginia), and it was just awful the whole way through. Yeah, he really struggles financially, so I understand why he might have decided to do something that actually makes him a salary. I would assume this "corporate job" (whatever that means to him; I wouldn't assume he means that quite literally, but who knows) is still music related .... either that or he was bullshitting you all. I don't wtf he was talking about when he said touring is too much for his age though. He's only in his mid-40s, no? At any rate, that fucking sucks he stunk up the stage. Maybe he was on something or drunk??? Hope not. I have never seen such a review of a JA show, so that sounds really weird. Anyway, I hope he pulls it together by September. I will be sorely disappointed if this show sucks and makes me uncomfortable.Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Oh my goodness, I was trusting that you got a bad show, but no..... just saw his show tonight and it was at least as disastrous as you describe. At some point it was just about the tech issues. They had to work shit out technically the second he came on stage and it took a while. But then he just didn't try. Super weird show. I am worried about the guy. I think he might be having a drug problem, seriously. Pretty sure he's fought that demon before... I feel like it's possible that he's fighting that demon again. That show was FUCKED. Terrible. He did berate some idiots for talking over his show, and I liked that because it was right, even though everything already blew. At the same time it took away from an already fucked up show... so I dunno. It was a mess.what dreams said:I went to a Joseph Arthur show last night (in Virginia), and it was just awful the whole way through. Poor Joseph. I am such a huge fan of his music... I feel sad about his show.
His behaviour on stage just wasn't right. Beyond just artist weirdness. He was so.... I dunno. If he isn't fucked up on some drugs, then I would guess he needs help psychologically. But hey, maybe I'm wrong, I don't know the guy.

Really sad to hear all of this. He couldn't have been more on point and focused at the RNDM shows.
I have noticed he's posted some weirder (than normal) stuff on Instagram lately
Hope he is ok0 -
Me too. Yeah, I saw him 4 years ago and he was totally solid back then. But this... I don't think I can even properly convey just how awful he was last night. I mean not a single song was even really listenable. And of course the crowd sucked shit. It was awkwardly empty in there, but he lost many of those who did go right away. Some people were being very rude and talking and everything, but really one can almost not blame them, because he didn't demand any attention at all. Oh, and he bailed on the show. He only did a handful of songs. Then he just gave up and the show was over. So fucked up. Good thing the tix were cheap.
I should have mentioned though.... his painting that he did on stage was pretty awesome. So he's still got that goin' on. Yay. Although... even that took no effort or feeling from him. It was more just a standard template of his work. Not what he usually does. No feeling in it, since by that time he had given up.
Oh, but the opener was GREAT! Reuben Hollebon. Beautiful voice, so full of feeling. And gorgeous, lol. His bassist was also awesome. I feel bad that he's having to open for the train wreck that is Joseph now. And that makes me depressed. JA is one of my favorite artists ever. I feel worried, mostly, and let down. I have heard his boots and they're great. The poor guy is falling apart I think.I hope he has some loved ones who can help.

He's had a few posts on Instagram recently recommending books he's been reading. They've been about psychopaths and social disorders. In those he talks about seeing those traits in a relationship and talked about an ex. So, I'm guessing he's gone through a pretty bad break up, and possibly still dealing with this person. Based on his posts, it sounds like it's wearing on him.6/29/98 Chicago-United Center

Well, if that's it, that sucks, but it's a hell of a lot better than a drug problem at least....RP112579 said:He's had a few posts on Instagram recently recommending books he's been reading. Getting even more worried about him. He's rambling on instagram the last week again, taking shots at Peter Gabriel and just generally not making any sense
Is it me? Hope I'm wrong0 -
No, I'm feeling the same since that disaster of a show I saw that was just so weird, where he seemed so off in his performance and general behaviour. Also, his little anti-Trump song and video is pretty bizarre, mostly because the lyrics and the feel of it are just kind of embarrassing. It's just so amateur. Even for that kind of thing, like the spur of the moment songs and videos that he occasionally does, it just didn't seem like the usual Joseph at all. I am also worried.Daron Oshay said:Getting even more worried about him. He's rambling on instagram the last week again, taking shots at Peter Gabriel and just generally not making any sense

Some recent Instagram posts from Joseph to set our minds at ease... He's "happy as fuck" right now“Do not postpone happiness”

That doesn't explain that fucked up show I saw a month ago. If that is how he performs when he is happy as fuck he'd better reexamine the choices he is making on stage. That show felt like a near mental breakdown to everyone there. I have seen him before, and that shit wasn't normal. So if he is mentally and physically well, I will.havs assume that he has really lost some interest in putting on a decent show for paying fans. Either that, or he is willing to have a public hissy fit by not bothering to play or sing in a way that is palatable.
Still love him, but clearly I am still really disappointed and feeling let down by his show last month.Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0 -
I read "the tough times were months ago" and "I'm emotionally and mentally in a good place right now" as being positive. As if he's acknowledging that he wasn't in a good place recently but is now.

Yes, I noticed he said that, but the show I saw was only a month ago, and he's saying months ago, so from that I assume he at least thought he was okay for that show. But anyway, whatever his problem was or is or whatever, I wish him the best. I am (was???) a megafan, so that felt like more than just a bad show to me. It was like it might feel if we went to a PJ show and Eddie was on crack and just mumbling half the songs while Matt had an injured hand and Jeff had a hissy fit and marched off stage before they'd played for 45 minutes. It just felt really shitty to witness that JA show, i felt dissed as a fan who has been a big supporter if his and had been looking forward to seeing him for 7 months, and I guess I'm not over it yet, lol. I even took a friend with me for his birthday, and it kind of made my birthday gift to him suck; my friend was right on the cusp of being a full-fledged JA fan at that point too, but the show ruined that path. I guess I am feeling kind of mad at Joseph if he's actually feeling okay and still put on that performance, because that wouod mean he was just acting like a jerk. Although that would still be better than him being mentally ill or addicted to drugs, so.... (this is all said at an emotional level appropriate to the musical situation btw, lol, before you think I am getting too emotional, haha).goldrush said:I read "the tough times were months ago" and "I'm emotionally and mentally in a good place right now" as being positive.
