    Winnipeg 2005
In a spirited move, we open with Betterman tonight. Far from a traditional opener, I feel the song works in that it eases one into a show but still gets the toes tapping and head nodding profusely. Ed sings the entire first verse instead of the crowd taking over. It's mostly tag less, and a good play to start the gig. Another great choice in song placement is Hail Hail up next. Matt has a few extra snare fills; the performance is bright and refreshing. Fluent set flow a'plenty, Corduroy also nicely demonstrates the better than average 2005 audio mix (it also made Hail Hail sound great). The sound is a bit smoother on this boot with slightly better mixing levels than some 2005 boots. Reminiscent of the 2000 boots, Grievance follows Corduroy. Then, it's absolutely ferocious to have Save You next. Ed does sing a couple lines in a slightly higher register to make them emphasized in Save You, the last half of the song is adrenaline. It’s a great version of the Riot Act rocker. Sad has a false start tease, and we go into a good GTF instead. Sad then makes its appearance after that. Ed slightly mumbles the lyrics towards the end of the first verse, but it's honesty not too noticeable. Mike and Matt really give the song an extra push; overall, the rarity sounds pleasing.

Ed praises both the Winnipeg crowd and the bands crew, and we push ahead with NFY (tag less tonight). Matt sounds limber on the rocker, lots of added open/close high hat and kick drum beats. Jeff's bass tone is warm on Daughter, giving the song a strong backbone. Wishlist sounds rawer than usual here, but always works well with Daughter. Ed fumbles a line or two towards the end. Raising the energy levels is a bright Even Flow with Matt putting on an extra good showing, Stone and Mike making the end of the solo sound very original. I love Stone's riff towards the end of the solo. It's kind of softer but creates a soothing effect. Untitled is extended here lyrically, with several improv lyrics. Ed fumbles a line in MFC, but again it's small. Half Full does not ignite quite like it usually does, it seems like Mike is not quite on all the way early on. Some of the transitions are cautious sounding. That all being said, Ed is focused. His lyrical improvs taking aim at President Bush and his vocal melodies on the "Save our world" part are excellent. Immortality is a welcomed surprise to follow, cool set flow. It's a more chilled version of the mysterious tune. Even the jam is more subtle, but it still complements the haunting nature of the song. Lukin-Jeremy come after, and the crowd sings quite loudly. It's not Ed's most convincing take on Jeremy vocally, but musically it's quality. Black finds Ed redeeming himself vocally; he holds that long note out like he does sometimes. It's a somewhat emotional take on the song too. I enjoy having it in the main set because it creates this sense of moodiness and a darker edge. DTE then sends the main set off rocking. Matt has some more extra snare rolls and Ed's vocals sound strong. Mike's a tad low in the mix at times on DTE, but otherwise it's a great way to end the main set.

The main set for Winnipeg 2005 is a bit of a unique one in a couple ways. First, as you could tell by looking at the setlist on paper, it has an intriguing and different kind of ebb and flow. At times it sounds and feels very bright and energetic; the first 5 songs are like that. Then the rest of the main set, up until DTE, has that darker edge. Second, the band overall sounds into it and enjoying themselves but the performance still maintains the mid-tempo and somewhat mysterious feel to many of the songs. If played too fast or with a fun, bouncy style, then some songs lose a bit of their edgy flavor in trade; not quite the case here. Perhaps this is an over analyzation of what's here, but that's the way it connected with me personally on first listen.

Ed tells the crowd that during Black he had his eyes closed and opening them to see them was a moving experience. The performance definitely reflected that for sure! In Hiding is a surprise to open the first encore. The first verse of the song is technically rough with the guitars mostly absent, and Ed meshes some words together. It still sounds solid though, and not too shaky. Ed sounds great during the choruses. It was the first time it was played in 2005 and played only two times after on that tour. In My Tree is of course the reworked version. Having it right after In Hiding is indeed beautiful. I must say, the reworked version is growing on me. I very much like how melodic it is. The outro has a level of imagery that's created, and simply wonderful. Comforting set flow is created with Crazy Mary immediately following, and rich vocals from Eddie. I had chills for almost the entire song; it's a powerful version of the classic cover. Mike's solo too, it's pure Heaven in Crazy Mary. I'm not completely sure why, but Stone's intro to Alive sounds so good here. One might think this would end the encore, but nope; Blood is our send off here! It sounds like Matt may have dropped a stick and misses a few snare hits in the intro but when he hits that snare coming back in it's like an accent, and it's a cool subtle moment. Ed's screams are strong, and the band sound so alive. It's an epic ending to an incredibly enjoyable encore.

Enter encore two, unusually so, Indifference opens. The crowd has such enthusiasm for it. Boom's keys are high in the mix in the first verse and it really gives the song an even more haunting feel. Stone's guitar melodies are simply magic, as are Ed's emotionally charged vocals. This may in fact be my favorite version of Indifference. A lady from the audience is brought on stage, "The Smile Girl." Kim wanted to hear Smile and had it written on her shirt. What a moment that had to be for her! This was the first time it was played on that tour and was only played once more in 2005. It's not the tightest play on the No Code number, but it's still quite solid and definitely good spirited. Ed notes the importance of Uncle Neil and him being from there; Small Town is for him. It keeps a folky vibe going and is a good play before covering Uncle Neil's Fuckin Up. I loved how Matt's snare sounded on much of the cover. It gets high up in the mix at times and has such a good "pop." The guitar solos are the highlight though, both Mike and Stone's. Another Neil Young cover finishes the show, RITFW. During the song, Ed tells the crowd that they have been absolutely "fucking amazing."

Although Winnipeg may not be the tightest performance from the 2005 tour, it still makes for one hell of a bootleg. Ed has a few moments of slightly fumbled lyrics, but those do not really distract the overall song or the show. What's notable here is the flow/vibe, the first encore all around being wonderful, and one of the best setlists of 2005 in my opinion. Not to mention, audio mix wise it's easily one of the better sounding 2005 bootlegs (which I've grown to enjoy their raw, but still crisp sound). The performance, while not perfect, is still quality and has lots of heart put into it. Crazy Mary and Indifference are phenomenal on this boot. The main set has an interesting, slightly edgy, and energetic vibe to its performance and flow as well. Winnipeg 2005, for me, is one of the best bootlegs of the great 2005 tour.
