Some poster framing questions
Comments

I would think you could call them and ask for a quote over the phone. Just have the dimensions of the poster ready. I bet the awkwardness wouldn't be the hurdle if you wanted to leave with the poster, but rather after seeing the matte options and frames you would be too excited to not get the framing done.ldent42 said:How do you transport your posters to the shop? Do you roll it back up and stick it in a tube or do you carry the whole portfolio?
Also, when you go into a new frame shop for the first time to inquire about pricing, is it better to bring the poster with you or no? I'm afraid if I bring a poster and it ends up being too expensive, I'll feel weird about just packing it up and leaving so I might end up just getting the expensive frame job to avoid that awkwardnesswhich is why I'm thinking of going in without the posters but I'm concerned they won't take me seriously if I just walk in there empty handed asking for pricing.

I'll put them back in a tube to take in to the shop...
it's only when you store them in the tubes for long periods they get damaged!!
I would definitely take your poster in with you...
and tell the framing professional what you are hoping to do!
Go into the shop with a budget for your frame job,
and tell the framer what you are planning to spend on this project.
If they can't get close to your number,
thank them for their help and find another place to do your work!
I've even taken several posters in at once,
and asked Julia to give me a written estimate for each project.
I tell her upfront that I won't be doing all of these now,
but I'm budgeting money for the future.
Hope this helps!!

Hoff has done all of my posters. He does great work and his prices were good when he was running the specials. I think a got a print framed with double-matting and UV glass for $180.bootlegger10 said:

Hoff has done all ine as well, except the 1st as I didn't know him then, but 7 in total. I was even sending them from Canada at the time as it was cheaper for him to do them than my local framer. But the dollar was pretty much par then, don't think I'm going to be sending any to him in the near future unless that dollar gets a whole lot better2005 - London

Can any Aussie in Melbourne recommend a reputable, well priced place?0 -
Wow Dave...I never knew you liked kittens so much!
I think Hoff is still a member, it would be worth PM'ing him.
My number one in going the DIY route, make sure you get acid free backings and mats (if you want mats) , it may be a bit pricier now, but unless you like your posters discolored or stained go ahead and get the cheap frames. I wouldn't let a HL or Michael's touch my posters with a 10 foot pole, I've heard many horror stories. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

I was just in Sarajevo on vacation and a friend was getting a picture framed at a local shop. Showed the lady a picture of something I have had done for a poster(2 mats, cutout for ticket, etc) and was quoted under $50 US....lol. I should have packed all of my posters although getting them back to the States might have been a problem."Populated with every reject and cutthroat from Bombay to Calcutta. It's worse than Detroit."0

Sorry about all of the kitten pix!!
I got a message from Photobucket that my storage was getting low, so I had to delete a bunch of images.
When I was doing that...I decided to organize what I had left, and moved all of my framed posters to one subfolder, breaking all of the links I had previously posted.
I'm working on a photobucket "story" with all of my framed gig posters...when I get it finished, I'll post the link here!!

Dry mounting is applying a glue to the back of the poster and to the backing that you have to stick it to. In college, I did this with products like rubber cement or Super 77. After dry, you then permanently adhere the two pieces together. There may be archival products to do this. (Neither rubber cement nor Super 77 would be archival.) However, dry mounting is permanent, at least in all applications I did it. I would not suggest it.2014: Cincinnati
