You want to talk about the sound/recording quality of this album, listen to it with some quality headphones. Not earbud, iPod headphones...I'm talking high-quality Bose type headphones. Wow. The album is indeed atmospheric, but also "encompassing" (does that make sense?); you end up adrift in that musical sea. Its fucking awesome.

Easily one of my top PJ albums.

    As a high-quality headphone-listener, I second this.

I'd love to see them work with Adam Kasper again.

riot act is a gem. the tour was great. what i don't understand is how this album can be slammed. each of their albums takes you to a different place at a different time. this band has evolved unbelievably over 25 years. even if you don't love all the material they have produced they have such an incredible body of work that very few bands even come close to. the songs i really don't care for aren't because they aren't good . its because i've just heard them too much. this band truly amazes me in the quality and quantity. you go to a show of some band thats been around for this long and they come up with new material at a show and all you want to do is get a beer until they play something good. even if one feels their material isn't up to par it is stil amazing on a lot of levels. but as always to each his own.

    best PJ album lyrically

    I agree
Love the lyrics on this one.
  • "Love Boat Captain" and "You Are" are so so good, but never seen either one live unfortunately in 13 shows. Maybe "Bushleaguer" will make a comeback in the setlists when Jeb gets elected into office to carry on the Bush agenda?!

I hadn't listened to RA in years and recently went on a 2 day car ride and put it in.
Wow! this thing is a beast! There must be a hundred songs on there? It just kept going and going and going, and to the dark side. I was wore out by the end. I just got a new pair of high end headphones for Christmas and back to the dark side I go. If I'm not back in a couple of hours please call for help. Hahaha!

This album really deserves the full headphone treatment the same way any of the creative albums (Vitalogy, No Code, Binaural) do. I can listen to any of the other albums outside these four making dinner, in the car, normal day to day stuff, etc but these albums, especially Binaural and Riot Act have an array of background noises, instrumentation, percussion and backing vocals I'd bet 50% of fans have never heard before simply because they've not had the time to listen on good headphones. Make a space in your life to properly discover them because they never sound the same again afterwards. Even the songs I once thought were duds on Riot Act are now among my favourites. It took me eight years to fully appreciate Binaural and I still make little discoveries listening to it and only during the last year has Riot Act for me become a truly great album rather than an average one. You need to listen to an album in the correct setting sometimes for it to make perfect sense. I had to take Backspacer into the car for it to come to life and same with Avocado. Everyone should go and listen to Riot Act with headphones and if you don't get it then well fair enough but it is my number four album now. I love the quote about being adrift on a musical sea and yes, it is fucking awesome!! :D

Cool post, some albums require more listens, for me binaural is the most played for me and took me years to get into it. Post roskilde it would always be a difficult album for them and after I heard I a mine knew it would be emotive. With George bush still in office it held genuine anger and when the band are focused, like vs they hit different heights. Great album, a poignant arc and best closing song.all or none of any record, or maybe indifference.

Yeah as I mentioned just got a pair of Audio Technica MTX50's and wowza does Binaural and Riot Act really come to life! I had been listening to Can't Keep a lot but from Ed's solo stuff and got a little bored of it so it was great to hear it full band which gave it life. Being in a dark basement with good headphones on really let me get into the mood of Riot Act which helped me appreciate the back half of the record which I have never appreciated. I love Bushleager btw.
    It's all kinds of groovy!
