I don't really expect anyone other than the Conservatives to win as long as the left vote is split the way it is. Crazier things have happened, and it's looking closer now than it has in years, but I still think it will be a minor miracle if it does. I think the NDP and the Libs should form a coalition.... but they won't.

It's not rocket science here - FT agreements do open markets and eliminate tariffs which in theory allows various industries to compete in new territory. But this is the fundamental problem with FT agreements in Canada. How does one compete against all the other competitors? By price. How do you compete on price? You lower your cost to produce and manufacture a good. How do you do that? You lower wages, you cut overhead (fire people) or you move your labour force where it's cheaper. That's what NAFTA did. That's what TPP will do.

Ya - I grew up poor and I worked but I'm not blind. I know I am where I am today because there was a social infrastructure that allowed a kid from a poor family to get an education and to go to university. I know the community programs that fed me breakfast were huge. I know the the after-school programs that allowed me to learn an instrument or play sports kept me from mixing with the wrong crowd. I know that our health care system allowed my family to not worry about paying doctors bills. Although I do pretty good right now - I know that the decimation of our social infrastructure will hurt me in the long run. But hey - I just want a handout and I'm a lunatic but at least I'm not an idiot.

6 reasons why you need to carefully read the small print on Harper's Trans-Pacific Partnership deal

Only two weeks before election day, the Government of Canada has reached an agreement on the sweeping Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Conservative leader Stephen Harper said it was an "historic day," however Canadians may not get a look at the small print until after election day, as only the broad highlights of the deal have been made public and key details are still missing.

The devil is most likely in the details.

If ratified, the TPP will carry wide-reaching implications for Canadian laws and regulations.

While some will argue those changes could mean a net-benefit for Canada, other changes could feel like "swallowing dead rats," at least according to New Zealand's trade minister.

Here are a few of the issues people are raising about the TPP:

1. It lets foreign corporations sue governments for lost profits
The deal's "investor-state dispute settlement mechanism" will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments in secretive tribunals, something that would leave taxpayers covering foreign corporations for lost profits.

Critics say this undermines national sovereignty and democratic institutions.

Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz argues the TPP will impose "fundamental changes to countries' legal, judicial, and regulatory frameworks, without input or accountability through democratic institutions."

U.S. Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren blasted the move as shifting power from domestic courts to "unaccountable international tribunals" while even the libertarian Cato Institute says it extends "special privileges to foreign corporations" and "usurps national sovereignty."

2. It risks killing 1 in 4 Canadian auto jobs
Unifor economist Jim Stanford estimates TPP could kill 24% (24,600) of Canada's existing automotive manufacturing jobs.

Under NAFTA, 60% of vehicles and parts sold tariff-free had to be manufactured in North America. But under TPP, that's reduced to 45% - that effectively rewrites key protections for the auto industry originally written into NAFTA.

The Government of Ontario is expressing concern over the "tariff reduction schedule and the rules of origin for autos and parts," warning that the deal will "expose both Ontario's auto assembly and parts producers to much stiffer global competition," threatening job losses in the auto sector.

3. It could mean a "significant overhaul" of Canadian copyright law
Open Media says the changes to intellectual property law spelled out under TPP "poses an extreme threat to free expression online."

The group points to a leaked draft of TPP intellectual property changes suggesting strengthened criminal penalties for copyright violators, new powers to block websites and an extension of copyright terms by 20 years.

University of Ottawa's Michael Geist, a Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law, says if true, this would mean a "significant overhaul" of Canadian copyright law.

Reviewing the Government's summary released Monday, Geist notes the text is not finalized and the government does not specify how long copyright terms will be increased.

4. It could help polluters profit
Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune says the deal will "empower big polluters to challenge climate and environmental safeguards in private trade courts and would expand trade in dangerous fossil fuels that would increase fracking and imperil our climate."

5. It will increase the price of medicine world wide
One of the biggest winners under the TPP are pharmaceutical companies.

There are questions about what this means for any future national pharmacare program. And increasing the length of patents delays the length of time for cheaper generic drugs to come to market, effectively driving up the price of medicine in some of the world's poorest countries.

Economist Joseph Stiglitz and former US Secretary of Labour Robert Reich warn these changes could delay cheaper generic forms of essential, life-saving drugs. Doctors Without Borders says "the big losers" under TPP are "patients and treatment providers in developing countries."

6. It's more than just a trade deal
Stiglitz and Adam Hersh have challenged the language being used to refer to the agreement as misleading.

It's not about "free trade," they say, so much as it's "an agreement to manage its members' trade and investment relations."

The Nordic countries are capitalist countries that also have strong social policies. Their high tax rates have led to some of the happiest, healthiest and most well-educated populations in the world, with low poverty rates. Somehow, despite their egalitarian societies, they just don't seem to view themselves as mediocre; in fact, the quality of life in those countries is at least as good as in Canada (and it beats the crap out of that of the US). I don't believe that the goals and wishes of most Canadians are that different from those of the average Swede, Norwegian or Dane, regardless of our geography.
