I think this thread has pivoted... at the beginning it may have been about Tsarnaev, but clearly it's now about what punishment fits which crime. Tsarnaev's treatment is a current and relevant case study on that topic.

There's been some decent exchanges in this thread recently. Nobody's saying you need to check in or bother with it. What's the issue?

Definitely the rare and obscene cases.

In the case of the 16 year old gangster murdering another 16 year old gangster, Norway's system is perfect: there is an actual effort made towards rehabilitation where rehabilitation can be appreciated. I'm pretty sure there are many in Norway that wish they could be more selective with their efforts- who's interested in rehabilitating Breivik (or people like Clifford Olson)?

I do have to tip my hat to Norway given they say they are interested in rehabilitating criminal offenders and do a good job realizing this goal. We have the same goals in North America, however our efforts fail given the fact that we really haven't made the commitment required to achieve the results (in essence... we truly don't care).

The nature of the crime drives my thought process. Let the punishment fit the crime. If you blow a bunch of people up at the Boston Marathon... you can go. If you got tangled up in a drug deal gone badly... let's work on you.

Edit: Often... this was a response to your post. I have a tablet that I might fire into the garbage. It screws up the quote feature and sometimes when I'm typing... all of a sudden my cursor has moved into the quoted portion of the text and my post has become a mess. I had a more elaborate and fancy response, but my tablet buggered it up and, after deleting the horrific draft I had assembled for myself... I moved to my laptop to offer you this..

Thanks Thirty - I, too, know the pain of the carefully crafted post that gets whisked into the void by a poorly functioning keyboard  , and who really feels like typing it all out twice?

I won't presume to know the opinions of Norwegians, but I've read that generally they were satisfied with Breivik's sentence, which is the maximum allowable by Norwegian law - 21 years in custody (with the provision for extension if the inmate is not judged to be rehabilitated). They seem content to allow him his kick at the rehabilitation can and see how it goes. Now Clifford Olson ..... I think we can all agree that's not a guy who was ever going to be rehabilitated. (Bernardo? I'm pretty sure no. Pickton? I think there's a lot we don't know about what went on there; he is unlikely to have been the brains of that operation.)

Just had to jump in on this, Thirty - don't get rid of your tablet yet! I've experienced what you and often have...pretty sure it's more to do with the auto-save function here.

(Also, I tried to cut and paste the article from the link in Nart's thread for you but it won't load as it did yesterday. Again, not your tablet!)

I would think regardless of Norway's value system, there are many that look at that situation for what it is and would prefer to see Breivik hung versus going on hunger strike because the prison limits his choices of video games (no joke). I have 'One of Us' in the queue right now- hopefully it offers a chance at a perspective that we are speculating about.

As to your question of balance and priorities with regards to a penal system... may I suggest you repeat it and offer it in the DP thread?

    Pshew!

I just was getting ready to Frisbee the thing and you saved it!

Cheers, Hedo. It's comforting to know my pain is a shared pain.

I had not heard of "One of Us", so thanks for bringing it to my attention - it sounds fascinating. Last October I was lucky enough to hear two lectures from one of the psychiatrists who assessed Breivik for the Norwegian court, and that was certainly an eye-opener. Too bad all of the videotaped testimony was, of course, in Norwegian.

as he should be, choices were made that led him to this place and now it's time to pay up, I wonder what he thinks about his reasoning now.

Yet another story where intervention could have offered prevention. Yet... I'd bet my house on people pulling their hair out (especially around here) if authorities did detain these two f**king losers to probe their mischief.
