how many languages can you speak ??

    I learned quite a few at school. I am from Germany. My first foreign language was Russian, I'm from Eastern Germany. Then after the wall fell, I got to learn Latin, English, French, too two years of Spanish too. At university, I studied French for a bit, and got a master in English. Then I went abroad for a semester to Finland and learned some Finnish there. So I guess I'm at five. I can say and write at least a sentence in all of them. I once talked to a Finnish movie director, but the convo soon became too much for me :lol: I'm still pretty good at French, Latin is not a spoken language but helps a lot figuring out anything written that has the same linguistic background, and I can read Russian and understand a tiny bit. English is the main second language I use. I work as a translator, and live in America now, so I have to use it all the time. Languages are fun!

    im chatting with someone at the moment who is portuguese, italian and irish and he can speak
    portuguese, italian, french ,spanish and english, my goodness where does he store it all but does not know gaelic

    It is not that hard to find your way around it if you do know some basics in certain languages. Spanish, Italian, French etc all have the same origin, Latin. English has had influences from Latin, French and Scandinavian languages. If you learned something like Spanish when you are German, you understand something of all the languages that have parts of the same origin. I have always been a language person and always enjoyed learning new ones. Not everybody is a language person. I suck at everything that has to do with numbers and math :lol:

    I speak Irish and English and can understand a good bit of French (I studied it for 7 years but we're crap at teaching languages in Ireland!). I understand some Danish and German but would love to become fluent

    English and enough French to get buy when traveling. My French always gets much better when I'm using it, not surprisingly, then bottoms out again when I don't.

    Absolutely true.
    I'm Italian and for what I've been taught at school I should only speak Italian...
    But I've always loved English and I tried to learn it by myself.
    I can survive in France and when I'm in a Spanish-speaking country I usually talk in Italian and everything's fine :)
    I can also say hello in Thai and thank you in Icelandic :D

    English. Hubby's first language is Arabic. He's tried to teach all of us. The kids are better than I, but I can understand enough to get through a simple conversation. I can read it too but then have to work really hard on translation. It's a tough language but very beautiful.

    English and four years of French. I'm with often in that it fades when not speaking it regularly. I found that the short time I spent in France had me practically thinking in that language - little of the mental translation I do now.

    I also know several Persian words and phrases.

    I was raised on English, and went through French Immersion throughout grade school, though it's been years since I've had an actual conversation in French. Lately I've been watching bits of French television, and just last night part of my dream had me thinking and speaking French, lol.

    English, took 2 years of Japanese in high school and can remember very little of it.

    I can swear pretty good in Spanish, and know enough bits and pieces to get the general idea of what someone's talking about.

    . . . and I'm pretty good with the Pig Latin too!

    English and body language mostly as well as a little Spanish and a few words of French, German, Russian and Italian. Oh, and one question in Japanese my high school girlfriend taught me: Ima nan-ji desu ka? (What time is it?)

    What I find very interesting is that now that I have been living in the States for nearly three years, and talking in English on a daily basis, it has gotten more fluent, but is not perfect by all means. I do not feel comfy taking jobs where I have to translate from German into English. The more you know the more you know how hard it is to translate... I think I have phases where I dream in English and then some where I dream in German. It depends on the subject and on my workload, I guess. And while I don't have any problems doing my translator job, I noticed that I have problems talking in German. You use your tongue in different ways in both languages. English is a lot on the front of the mouth, German is more in the back. When my parents or friends were here for a visit, I always got mouth pain from changing between the two languages so much at first. I need time to get into the groove with German, but it doesn't take long. And I have to pay attention not to use too many of the practical and convenient filler phrases from English, like "like", "you know" and stuff like that, in German. It is very interesting to live with two languages.

    If it makes you feel any better everyone I know has a similar experience with switching back to their mother tongue. I can't tell you how many people have told me that when they went back home for a visit no one could understand them or made fun of their accent lol. It happens here too though. I've seen friends get chastised or made fun of for being 'fake' Russian or Polish or becoming too Americanized by more recent arrivals lol. And nothing beats the panic in someone's eyes when they realize mid-sentence that they forgot the word for something in their first language :lol:
