i think he might lurk from time to time. last time i talked to him he was pretty much over the pearl jam forums. this moving train died out around 2010. lots of awesome posters left about that time. it was much better and much more diverse when you did not have to pay $40 to post. i think the discussions had more substance back then. nowadays you pretty much know what each poster is going to say before you read their posts.rr165892 said:Something tells me he never really quit monitoring what's happening here.

Oh, it's just the weird connections in my head: green hat, goofy smile, straw (weed)-> chewing on something ( weed brownies)-> you know the rest, LOL!hedonist said:Yep, in the old days

anybody could have signed up on the message board. you did not have to be in tenclub.
back then, there were people from all over the world posting in amt. i learned about the israel palestine conflict from actual palestinians. there were people from pakistan on here. people from china, australia, new zealand, england, ireland, south america, scotland, all over the place. everyone contributed their perspective on things. everyone contributed links to the newspapers of their countries so we got a much more worldly perspective on the actual issues.
there was a lot more fighting back then as well. but then people would get a permaban and come back a few days later with a new screen name. the fun part was trying to figure out what new guy is which former poster. turns out most posters have their own posting characteristics so after awhile it was easy to tell.
the funny thing is, when i was being told to get the fuck out of america in 2003, the international posters seemed to be the only ones who had my back."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

if i had to guess i would say probably because it is easier to control this way. i think if you make people pay for the privilege of posting, they will think twice about personal attacks. if someone feels like they have something to lose, they will most likely edit themselves and play nice.
i can see that point. if there are 20,000 people posting for free, at least 3/4 of them will enjoy it enough to be willing to pay for it. that way the band makes some cash out of the deal, and those that don't pay will not be around so there will be less people, less forums, less threads to have to moderate. less problems i guess.
i don't know why they ultimately made the decision, but websites cost money. i am sure all of us tenclubbers have contributed to building the site and forum and maintaining it with our annual dues."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

many artist websites have gone this route in the last 5 years or so. it's an added revenue stream, and a way to filter out the trolls. especially artists who are politically outspoken.brianlux said:

I've heard from a lot of people that it was also a complete shit show when it wasn't closed, and many say they much prefer it now. Apparently it was worse than facebook as far as the abuse and attacks went. I doubt you would have preferred it in the long run Brian! Pretty sure they did indeed close it to the public because the mods just couldn't keep up with all the abuse.gimmesometruth27 said:
