leave that album space open to bring back a song like GIRL. a bad ass song that has never really seen the light of day. id much rather have a studio version of GIRL than ARC.

Yeah because Girl would fit right in on Riot Act.

    Arc is a great song.

  • there are 9 "arcs" in the song for each of the 9 victims lost at the Roskilde festival. It's really cool. Nice tribute.

Wow I never knew that. Now I like the song even more. I saw them perform it in Dallas several years ago, wish I had known that then. I think it is amazing to hear it performed live.

1.) This thread is terrible and shouldn't have been started.

2.) If you look hard enough you can find at least 2 and maybe 3 versions of Girl. Arc fits on Riot Act, Girl does not.

3.) Go buy Bayleaf and then come back here and tell me Stone can't sing.

4.25 What is the deal with Arc?
While trying to write something for one of the families who lost their loved one at Roskilde (see Question 6.9), Ed ended up writing this song in the studio. The chanting consists of his voice layered 10 times on top of one another. In Ed's words, "It is a song of grief".

    6.9 What happened at Roskilde?
Late on the night of June 30, Pearl Jam was playing their set at the annual Roskilde festival. Due to weather conditions, the front area was muddy and slippery. Due to this and the surging of an enormous crowd, a group of fans up front lost their balance and fell. Eight men were crushed to death, one more died in the hospital a few days later. Pearl Jam released the following statement after the tragedy:

    June 30, 2000

Statement from Pearl Jam in Response to Roskilde Festival Tragedy

Copenhagen, Denmark-This is so painful...I think we are all waiting for someone to wake us and say it was just a horrible nightmare.

And there are absolutely no words to express our anguish in regard to the parents and loved ones of these precious lives that were lost.

We have not yet been told what actually occurred, but it seemed to be random and sickeningly quick it doesn't make sense.

When you agree to play at a festival of this size and reputation it is impossible to imagine such a heart-wrenching scenario.

Our lives will never be the same, but we know that is nothing compared to the grief of the families and friends of those involved.

It is so tragic ... there are no words.

    Devastated, --Pearl Jam
The band has been cleared from responsibility in the accident, and blame has been placed on a variety of factors from the weather, to poor sound in the rear, to problems with the security command chain. The result from this incident will likely be that Pearl Jam no longer plays festival shows, or general admission crowds unless they are in strict control of the security arrangements.

Love Boat Captain off of Riot Act also makes mention of this tragedy: "Lost nine friends we'll never know, two years ago today".

how can a song without words be about something in particular?

i have always struggled with this...and i'm not talking about arc here...rather instrumental jazz...i could never grasp the concept that a song could have a meaning/story without actually having words in the song...weird shit.

some people need words to have them believe it's a song.

Bayleaf is fucking a gem. Stone sings great. His backgrounds remind me of the kings ray davies.

So the only way to express feelings and emotions is through words? You must be a very left-brained individual (not that there's anything wrong with that).

In your mind, I suppose Van Gogh was just a dude with one ear who painted pictures of flowers. Since, you know, none of his paintings had words.

Emotions/feelings/sentiments can be expressed in a variety of ways. Arc expresses a grief that is too big for words, which is why there aren't any.

how can i 'trash' a song thats not a song. all im saying is, if it didnt exist, or if it was never played again, or never mentioned again, i wouldnt lose any sleep over it. to me its album filler, same goes for bugs and all those other cutting room floor songs. Putting that on an album is about the same as letting stone sing a song on an album.

It might not be a song, but it's music, incredibly meaningful music.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not. He famously cut one off to send to a lover, probably because of the syphilis.

true. i think i saw it 3 times in '03, and it is utterly amazing live. waaaaayyyy more emotional and powerful in the live setting, plus its totally extended, and eventually just turns to chaos with all the looping...fantastic!

who said anything about "every" and "ever"

classical music compositions are songs but what i find hard to understand is how each song is about a certain particular thing, according to the composer of the song. so in the same line of thought, when you hear an instrumental song do you know what its definitely about? i don't.

im not saying the only way to express feelings/emotions is through words...rather just that i have a difficult time understanding the TRUE meaning of a song without any words in it.

who knew arc was about Copenhagen?...when you heard it for the first time did you automatically say "oh, thats about Copehagen"? i didn't.

personally speaking i have a hard time knowing what a song is about without any words. sure it's still a song, but not necessarily everyone thinks the same way as me.

keep in mind some classical songs/instrumentals are actually about actual specific things...not just merely aboutconveying general emotions/feelings.

    jesus christ people, back off.

just because a "song" has meaning for someone, doesn't mean everyone else has to like it. I also don't like Arc and don't think it's a song. I can't stand listening to it, but I respect the meaning it might have for Ed (or whoever), although I'm not going to fall all over it. I hear people talk about how Come Back has so much meaning for them...I simply cannot stand that song. I personally love Footsteps and it has meaning to me, but I am not going to bitch someone out for "not understanding the meaning" or throw them overboard because they disagree.

I think the original poster has the right to post that he thinks it sucks JUST as much as you people have to give your opinions against it. But don't go making him look like a bad guy or insensitive because he doesn't know why the non-song was written or what.

sometimes people can be so mean. maybe he just didn't know.

You have the right to hold the opinion that Arc sucks. But you don't have the right to hold the opinion that it is not a song, because that's not an opinion. That's a narrow-minded stupid as fuck thought process that has no reason to ever be verbalized or in this case typed out. Arc is a song. That's a fact.
