I had a similar thought about st Louis last year, again not that it was a bad show, just that it wasn't spectacularly special. though I could say the same about Wrigley considering the heat and rain and the debacle getting back to the hotel. Then again there's the scalp sunburn I got at BDO last year. Oh and the obnoxious teenage doushebags making fun of me for freaking out at the sight of bats at Atlanta '12 (cuz bats flying around a park in the middle of the city at dusk is such a NORMAL thing.... Fucking south)
But no... I don't think I've ever had a bad show experience.

Bats at dusk are normal here too, especially in the summer. What's not to love about bats- they're really cool creatures and they fly in such a crazy way, completely different than birds.

I think bats are awesome and cool, but there is the rabies factor and I can see how something coming at you from the air in the dark might freak some people out.

Well i traveled by plane to Missoula, and got the flu basically while I was in the air heading there. So that sucked. Still went to the show of course, and it was really great (though that probably would have been longer had Eddie not been sick himself)... but it and the whole trip would have been much better if I hadn't felt so horrible the whole time!

And then the next show was Wrigley, which was even farther away, and, well.... it was amazing, but we all know it would have been even better without that storm delay, even if it did make it an incredibly memorable and unusual scene, being a show in the dead of night at Wrigley field. Which was pretty amazing. But also, the heat. My god, the heat! I'm really not good in that kind of weather.

BUT I regret nothing!! The hardships were still well worth it. :)

So your "I regret nothing" (je ne regrette rien) was just a fluke? Whoops.

Bats having rabies is such an incredibly low risk problem. My husband (the park guy) hates when people perpetuate the bats-will-kill-you-with-rabies thing. (I'm not saying that you are doing this.) Bats are tiny. Pretty much when they have rabies, they are dead. Maybe there are different rabies issues in different areas of the world with bats that I don't know about. He teaches people about this all of the time. His other favorite is when people think that coyotes are evil. If we just let wildlife be wild . . . Bats are great! They eat the mosquitos and their flight is beautiful! Please enjoy them. I've talked for years about putting a bat house up in my little city plot backyard. Perhaps I should check into that again.

Now, if we want to talk about a bat problem, the Little Brown Bat is being wiped out by White Nose Syndrome.

Sorry for the derail OP. In keeping with topic integrity, I've not traveled a long way for a bad show for any band. They've all been great in their own ways.

st. louis last year....not a bad show...just a good show. didn't really warrant the round trip air line tickets from nyc along with hotel. but it was a weekend away from the kids.

And what could they have done to make it better for you that night?
The crowd was great, the band was on, I loved the venue...but the set list was just ok. I needed an immortality, or an in hiding...a release maybe? long road....just something.
my wife absolutely loved the set but like someone said before, we 're all spoiled.

the weakest show I ever saw was a weekend trip to hershey....didn't spend a whole lot but it was a terrible show.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me......

Definitely.... if the ATL didn't have bats then the mosquito bourne diseases would be out of control. Especially in the humid south. I agree, it is a little freaky seeing them for the first time when you aren't used to them. We used to watch the July 4th fireworks from a golf course up on the hill overlooking Asheville. Bats were flying around like crazy eating all the mosquitos.

Edit: for thread integrity- not a long way to travel, but Midtown 2012 was a disappointing set. Excellent performance of a "greatest hits"-type of setlist.

My least favo of 38 pj shows
    Arras France,2010..
the perrformance was excellent ,but a short list of 18 songs,at a small town in the middle ofnowhere,at the masin square during rain and lame crowd..after the festival sold ticket, and a month before date they add vip tickets in front of stage.. and they sold them to people of 60 years old and "high society"..there was people with suits in front of stage..and well dressed woman like ready to meet the president of france..and real fans of the band was behind that area..
and a HUGE pain in the ass to go to Belgium the next day from that city..needed to travel and change 3 different trains with waiting at stations..

It was a good show, but the '05 Quebec City concert suffered from Ed's hangover. A few songs were scrapped and I felt like the show could have had more potential were it not for Ed staying up with U2 all night prior in Toronto.

I can't say I've ever been to a bad show, but Milton Keynes was probably my least favorite for a few reasons--ended up waiting outside the venue for almost 2 hours for the person taking my extra, missed Ed's Porch preset, the people I went with were not very friendly, smoked the whole time, and were out getting drinks when they were not blowing smoke in my face (of course, my best friend did stick by me and rock out with me the whole time!), and the setlist had some real gems, but lots of greatest hits. Hard to beat the show that came after the Leeds show, too! But any PJ show is a good show, and there were some wonderful things about it too! I was with my best friend who stuck with me and rocked out with me the whole show, two awesome openers, gorgeous day, I was in freakin ENGLAND (I had never been to Europe before), and got NAIS (!!!!!), Rain, and Brain of J!

  • I would have to say Tulsa 2014. But that was just me personally. I know it was a great show, it just didn't have many of my favorites. But others I talked to just loved it! On the other hand, Lincoln 2014 was superb!

@deadendp I honestly didn't even know about the rabies. I didn't like the idea of bats flying around cuz I've got long hair and i didn't have a hoodie on me at that time. I also didn't know they ate bugs, but I can tell you those Atlanta bats must've not been hungry. I don't hate them, if I see them just chillin they might even be kind of cute I just don't like the idea of them being in that kind of setting, in more natural type parks like upstate or whatever by a highway type thing makes more sense to me.

That coyote on the other hand, is adorable. There's one hanging out near my area if you want to set up a habitat here lol.

Have you ever traveled a long way for a Pearl Jam show and that show just didn't live up to expectations? Maybe a shorter setlist, or not enough rarities or maybe something else afoot?

Where'd you come from, date/location of the show and other details?

Not much further than I usually have to travel. We traveled to the Groundwork show in Seattle 2001. They didn't release the playing order in advance, so we assumed PJ would close it out. They ended up playing a good set but it was only 50 minutes long. It was way to short. What followed was one of the most insane things I've ever seen at a concert. R.E.M. headlined and came on after PJ. I think 1/3 to 1/2 of the arena left after PJ's set. R.E.M. started playing to a fairly empty arena. They weren't fantasic and didn't play many classics, so more people left. I swear the arena was 1/3rd full by the time they finished.

I had originally blamed REM for not letting PJ close. I was wrong. I later heard PJ refused to headline as they had too much respect for REM. That's respectful, but you made R.E.M. play a headlining gig in front of a hometown Pearl Jam crowd. How'd you think it was going to end?

Travel time to Seattle is about 5 hours for me (combined driving, ferry and more driving).
