Mookie Betts

dlymnflddlymnfld CT Posts: 923
Was listening to the WEEI (Boston Sports talk) last week and D&C were interviewing Mookie Betts and he was talking about being named after Mookie Blaylock. They asked him if he knew Pearl Jam was originally called Mookie Blaylock and Betts said he never heard of Pearl Jam. D&C is a 4 hour block from 600-1000 and there are 3 more four hour blocks of different sports personalities throughout the entire day and night. The running theme for all of the shows that day was how a twenty something year old could have grown up never once hearing Pearl Jam. I thought it was ironic hearing so much PJ talk in one day since Betts was clueless about the band and my family is forced in emergence of the band due to my obsession. On a side note, the way Mookie Betts is tearing it up in spring training odds are that the PJ boys might here of him first as he is a stud. Nothing music related just thought I would share.

  • Totally don't mean to sound ignorant but is Mookie Betts tearing it up in Red Sox sprig training? Just wondering since you said Boston sports talk. Great post. Crazy to think of people not hearing of Pearl Jam but I can totally understand why he might not have.

To answer your first question he is hitting .438 in 10 games with an OPS of 1.156. So yes. . .at the age of 22 he's officially tearing it up right now. Not to mention he can flip an 0-2 count and turn it in to a hit or at least get on base. His plate control is very impressive. And as I referenced his age, he was one when Ten came out.

Plus 5 doubles and 2 triples in 10 games. He is the leading candidate for lead off but with Rusney Castillo making 72 million and with two veterans (Victorino and Ramirez) also in the outfield someone is the odd man out. But this I PJ forum so I will stop talking about the Sox.

I know I said I would stop talking about the Sox but Mookie hit a double and an inside the park homer today raising his average to .471. Farrel said there is no competition for center as Mookie is in and Castillo is out. Now I'll stop talking about the Sox. Go Mookie!! But the talk show host again plugged Pearl Jam saying "this kid is awesome but he still doesn't know who Pearl Jam is".

The bubble will burst and he will probably be sent back down to the minors in august.

Possibly, prospects definitely get overhyped sometimes. Mookie is a great hitter though and hasn't had much trouble at any level, including his MLB call-up last year. He even had a 66 game on-base streak last year. I'm hoping he plays well. Used to watch him play for the Portland Seadogs last year and could be an exciting player to watch.

It's not like the Red Sox don't have a history of overhyping prospects.

I'm 22 and I have plenty of friends who had never even heard of Pearl Jam until I introduced them. And usually, if they do, its not even the classics like Even Flow, Jeremy, Alive etc. that they know, its 90% of the time "Last Kiss"... Just the way it is unfortunately.

Actually other way around, Ten was one when Betts "came out".

That is crazy, simply crazy...but understandable seeing as many people dug that song. They can have it though.

Totally digging the Mookie Bromance Thread.
