I translate and create subtitles for movies and tv shows. If any of you fuckers ever becomes famous and ends up in an interview that might be published, please talk in complete sentences and not too fast. The subtitling community will adore you. Thanks

Have you ever noticed the subtitles in "Inglorious Bastards". They translate off of the words from French to English, except leave "Oi" as "Oi" instead of "yes". Really annoys me ahah

English subtitles are crap most of the time, that is what I notice. I think it is because English speaking countries are not traditional subtitling countries, they feel like there is no real need to do them good. Which is no good for the deaf and hard of hearing community. The same goes for classical dubbing countries like Germany, Spain or France, but with the digital age, media content needs to be put out much quicker and for less money, and subtitles are cheaper to be made than dubbing, so there is a market there. The best subtitles are made in Scandinavian countries, in my opinion. They know how to do it so you can follow the movie, and get the gist of what is said in a timely manner. This is also why Scandinavians usually speak a very good English, including the proper and frequent use of idioms. Low payments and translation companies in oversea countries who work for very little wages kind of destroy the market for quality subtitling and translation, no company really wants to pay for better quality. I hardly ever watch subtitled movies anymore cause the quality pisses me off lol But I try my best to improve it with my own work.
Oh, and I think they might have left the "oui" in there to create some sort of authentic mood, just like a lot of times Herr or Fräulein are kept in German movies even when they are translated into English

I know what you mean about subtitles. Sometimes they read differently then was actually said. Kind of like paraphrasing, I guess. Or sometimes the subtitles are done in huge letters right on the picture, as opposed to smaller print underneath or at the bottom of the picture. Some subtitles are so well done. There's at least one movie I can think of that doesn't have subtitles at all - Reservoir Dogs. I won't even watch it!

Subtitling is also about intelligently summing things up. I know that deaf and hoh people would love it all verbatim, but sometimes that is just not possible due to time constraints. We are walking a fine line all the time, thinking about what to cut and what to leave out. When letters are covering text or images that should be visible otherwise, they are badly done. There is a lot of science and thought going into the making of them, much more than you would think. It sucks if people have to miss out on movie experiences because there are no subtitles. I hope sooner or later everything will be captioned somehow. In a professional manner, not by some amateur subtitlers on the webs. Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue! http://community.pearljam.com/discussion/148993/please-pearl-jam-consider-a-vinyl-benaroya-hall-re-issue0
