Favorite "Ten" memories

What are some of your favorite "Ten" memories? do you prefer the original or the reissue/redux? for me the first time I heard ten was in my parents car, my dad put black on a mix CD and I was mesmerized. Even after listening to that album a hundred thousand times I still fall in love with it every single time. Some days I prefer the redux (okay most days actually) but today for some reason I put on the original and it came to life for me.

14 years old, 1992, listening to this on tape with my friend trying to make out what the fuck Eddie was saying. Studying the words and music like they were giving away some secret message.

I unfolded the liner card for the cassette and taped it to the inside of my locker door in school.
  • Garden… That's the song that sold me. I knew this band was legit from that song.

...now, you probably wish you still had those liner notes. ;)

I first got in to PJ in 2001, freshmen year of college. Growing up in a small town (no pun intended) I didn't have a radio station to hear rock. Most of the stuff I liked was classic rock (Beatles, stones, who, zepp, doors, Hendrix, etc.). PJ was like a breath of fresh air. I got through their whole catalogue and was hooked.

Sidenote, by brother in law saw them in St. Paul in 1992 and I took him to the St. Paul show in 2014. He said that they still are a kick ass rock band after so many years. I burned him the 2014 show and the 92 St. Paul show for Christmas.

Must have been my 15th b-day. Both my parents and girlfriend bought me Ten on cassette. They felt bad for getting me the same gift. I told them not to worry. I would need two because I was going to play the crap out of that tape. And I did.

Listening to Ten on my disman while riding the city transit to and from school. Listening to Black and Jeremy before they became staples.

  • My best Ten memory was while taking the Beaver Island Ferry back from the island to Charlevoix, MI.

The backstory is that my uncle who had died when I was an infant used to spend a lot of time on Beaver Island. More recently, my Grandpa (uncle's father) had died and it was a huge loss in my life. I had the opportunity to spend some time on Beaver Island while in school and it was great to experience some of the things my uncle regularly saw.

While taking the ferry back from the island, I had Ten playing on my discman. As Release played, I was standing at the bow of the boat looking out over the water feeling the breeze on my face with the sun setting behind me. The whole time thinking about my uncle and grandpa.

It was extremely powerful and I'll never forget it.

I remember the excitement of first hearing Jeremy in 2008, and then listening to it over and over and over again. It was the end of my junior year of high school, and I associate finding PJ with a huge upswing in my life--and credit PJ with greatly helping me through tough adolescent times. The music was just what I needed, it clicked so completely, and the rest is history!

In that respect BALLBOY, I love that the album begins on that note, and ends in the full song..
