Perils of posters in tubes

So a lot of time I notice that people warn on here about posters being in tubes for extended periods of time...

All of my posters are for personal use and I frame them, do I have anything to worry about if they have been stored in a tube for a couple of years?

What would be the problems encountered if a poster is stored in a tube for an extended period of time and what would constitute an extended period of time?

Thanks in advance.

The biggest problem with storing them in tubes is they become very resistant to flattening. Also, the ink can sometimes transfer onto other parts of the poster if it remains rolled without some sort of protection like craft paper. The flattening though - it makes it hard to mount the print if it rolls up on you, and sometimes you end up having to dry mount it to keep it flat in the frame, thus destroying the poster's value.

I understand the longer it remains rolled, the more chance of cracking on the poster when it is eventually flattened...
  • I would definitely get them flat if you can. There are cheap & easy ways to do so....

So basically if I never plan on getting rid of these posters, provided they don't crack I should be okay?

I had some of mine in tubes for a couple years and they flattened out fine. It took a little time they were fine, no cracking and look good framed.

I think I heard that they can develop flat spots or can get creases from being rolled for too long.
I let them sit out of the tube for a few days to naturally open up, then four large books on each corner for a few days helps me get them ready for my portfolio or flat file. The wight of the portfolio normally finishes the job. And I always put acid free paper between the print and the books or whatever it is you are using.

  • The older posters are more prone to cracking if they're stored in tubes. Seems the newer posters aren't made using the same printing methods so they don't have that problem.

When I receive a poster on trade or from 10C, I take it out of the tube and flatten it on a table for about a week using four weights (shot glasses work well). Then I bag it and put it in my portfolio until I can frame it.

I picked up a 20x26 portfolio at Michaels for $15.00. It's made of cardboardish type paper - so it's not something you would tote around with you, but it does the job wonderfully. The long posters don't fit though.
I also use acid-free poly bags from bags unlimited. Just slip the print in and tape it closed.

I had a poster from the Riot Act tour that I pulled out of the tube last November to start flattening it. There is some curl still in the paper. It does take time but hopefully it will all flatten out.
  • in a severe case... put the print between sheets of acid free paper, and put those between sheets of plexiglass. 100% full contact for a uniform flat.

Yep. There's no quick fix here. Patience is virtue

It's nuisance to keep the prints flats... a cheap method in storing them would be getting a 40x60 acid free foam board cut in half and 30x40 acid free tissue papers ... place the posters in beween the tissue paper folded in half and in between the foam boards held together by a series of fold back 1-5/8 binder clips - you can place two posters per layer

2 pieces of mdf 3mm board size depends on your biggest poster, mine is 4ft x 2ft, some duct tape and 2 big paper clips. Get some acid free paper, I brought 50 sheets cheap off ebay some time ago...solid portfolio for less than $20 and it fits nicely under the bed

If you do store your posters in tubes, please don't use those really skinny ones. They coil the posters so tight it ruins them.
