So I may not have a job after this tour.....

Hope all works out for you.
When boss mentioned consequences, did you ask what those might entail? Six years is a lot to toss away for some shows (at least it would be for me - mortgage, life, marriage, responsibilities, etc. - though I get priorities are subjective).
Can't remember the last time I took eight days off in a row. A week several years ago took planning and coordination with the folks I work with. Consider yourself fortunate if you're in a different boat. A luxury for sure, and frankly I'm a bit envious.
Good luck!0 -
This is true.. I'm not sure how your industry is but if this trip is going to jeopardize future job prospects, you may want to reconsider the trip? I know it's tough, but @hedonist is right, 6 years is a lot to toss away.Beegirl1980 said:
Yeah maybeSuziemay said:Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that
But it sounds like you aren't too worried about finding another job and your boss sounds like an ass anyway so maybe a blessing in disguise?
I think either way it will work out fine, I was planning on making a career change anyway but I would rather leave on good terms.0 -
6 years is a lot to toss away, but it can also be so freeing to do so. Maybe the OP was waiting for a sign? I was in my company for 7 years. I love my job, and still do it, just not as an employed person. 6 years are a lot. They can drag. Bosses can be assholes, and you just put up with it because of the relative safety it gives you. Maybe the OP needs a jump start to enter a new realm of professional opportunities ;;)
Whatever... I hope if she needs her job, she won't lose it.Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue! http://community.pearljam.com/discussion/148993/please-pearl-jam-consider-a-vinyl-benaroya-hall-re-issue0 -
Leeze, nice (as always) positive view. Honestly, sounds like no specific dates were in place at the time of discussion - a generic "some time off" thing. Maybe it's on both employee and employer?
Me, if I hated the work or boss or environment, could be worth the risk. If not, the scales wouldn't even come into play.
I don't know. I have no frog in this race, just tend to be overly-practical at times, and opining to boot

one more thing to consider too, if she cancelled her trip plans and went to work instead of taking the days off, that sets a precedent. Keep in mind some bosses treat individual employees differently. Personally, I would consider it worth the risk just so that this boss doesn't start to treat her like a doormat.NYC 06/24/08-Auckland 11/27/09-Chch 11/29/09-Newark 05/18/10-Atlanta 09/22/12-Chicago 07/19/13-Brooklyn 10/18/13 & 10/19/13-Hartford 10/25/13-Baltimore 10/27/13-Auckland 1/17/14-GC 1/19/14-Melbourne 1/24/14-Sydney 1/26/14-Amsterdam 6/16/14 & 6/17/14-Milan 6/20/14-Berlin 6/26/14-Leeds 7/8/14-Milton Keynes 7/11/14-St. Louis 10/3/14-NYC 9/26/15

If you asked for specific days and then they changed their minds, that's bullshit. If you didn't request specific days until it was too late, well, they're not too out of line. But i hope they had a good reason to insist that you don't take the days off! Some bosses just say no because they're pricks. :-q
I had to miss the Seattle show last year because of work. I was disappointed that i couldn't go, but I was needed at work and i knew it. That's life. I'd never sacrifice my job for a concert unless I hated the job and felt sure I'd be okay financially... maybe you hate your job and have good leads! In that case then maybe it's for the best!Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0 -

Sorry to hear about it, and I hope it turns out to be nothing. The consequences probably won't mean much if you were planning on ditching the job anyway. I get that you're hoping to part on good terms... nothing wrong with that. HOWEVER, I think your boss should stand behind the original agreement. A lot is expected of the folks lower on the totem pole; I think "superiors" should meet some expectations as well.
That being said, I hope you do whatever you think is best.0 -
Your boss sounds like your typical hollow shell and not a leader with conviction. Standard procedure when asked for time off at first is to avoid any discussions on details and take weak exit of saying "shouldn't be a problem". This is where your boss actually gave you a "I don't want to think about now or have to decide now" but for you, you have to make plans, buy tickets etc. when the time comes for you to prepare to go, boss realizes that he pretty much blew you off, did not take 5 minutes to figure out when originally asked, and now tells you that you have to suck it up due to his poor leadership skills. "Consequences" sounds like a veiled threat to me. Trust me when I tell you that you will be much better off in another environment with the chance to work for someone else. If you quit, do it before the show. Don't not go to the show, and then quit a week later due to the fact you've had it, and magnified by feelings of resentment such as "I missed Pearl Jam for this clown show" or something to that effect. If you depart, do it in writing, leave on good terms, with a clear understanding of your message and reason for leaving. Devoted 6 years, asked for time off, had what appeared to be a weak maybe, asked for a means to remedy it, and was offered a threat in return. My policy is, that when a member of my time asks me for time off, than it must be important to them to take the step of asking me, therefore it is incumbent on me as a leader to put the same amount of importance in the consideration. Your "boss" is a $hitty leader. Hang in there and follow your heart and confidence in yourself to land on your feet.
Hope it helps.0 -
I'm sorry I just don't understand , Why a concert is more important , than money ( helps go to next concert ) , stability and most of all a job as money makes the world go round , if you don't have any money your on your Arse!!!!
just don't get the logic really of going to the shows and the potential of not having a job to go back to , its fuckin madness , sorry but it is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
I don't get you people. You would risk your job over a concert? I love pearl jam as much as the next guy, but if my boss said I would be fired if I missed that time, no way I'd go. I don't know what you do for a living, I can see if you worked at a hole in the wall fast food joint making $7/hr. But if it's a good job, why risk it? Everybody has/had an ass hole boss. Just a fact of life.Post edited by Last-12-Exit on0

How in the loop did you keep your boss? Providing firm dates in the "MONTHS" leading up to these tour stops instead of waiting until Oct 1 to say "remember that time I said I needed off this month" is a better play, just my opinion.
That is not to say that bosses don't suck. Is there someone above him that you can take a grievance to, especially if you've booked hotels, flights, and tickets?Post edited by ikiT onBristow 05132010 to Amsterdam 2 061320180 -
Exactly. People are being so judgy without knowing the facts.PJ_Soul said:If you asked for specific days and then they changed their minds, that's bullshit. If you didn't request specific days until it was too late, well, they're not too out of line.

you find another job... unless she has the last job available on earth0

too many are scared alive0

Not worth losing a job over, unless you were looking to get out and have something lined up that is nearly a sure thing.... Or you are independently wealthy and can afford to do whatever you want.
Really. C'mon.0 -
Only the OP knows what's best for her. Like in my case - I work in a dying industry (printing), and it would be a bad thing to blow off a job with one of the few good places left for me to work. But for some other people...they might work in a better industry with more jobs, or a city with less unemployment, etc. Good luck to the OP.0

I get your point, but I am not the kind of person who stays at a job just because it pays the bills, or out of fear that there may not be anything else out there.Last-12-Exit said:I don't get you people. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't care or don't appreciate the job that I have, it's just that I planned this trip months in advance with his knowlegde, and at the last minute he changed his mind for no apparent reason. There is no emergency, there is no one who will have to do my work while I'm gone, and I have proved over the last 6 years that I can go away for a few days and still get things done in time when I get back.
If my boss had had a valid reason for telling me no, I would have accepted it without question and would have changed my plans. But in this case, he's telling me no "just because", and that makes me feel like I would be better off working somewhere else.
