here is my proposed solution to the permaban thing.
say you bought your membership in january. you get a few warnings over the months and end up getting a "permaban" in june.
i think the permaban should expire when it comes time to renew your membership. you pay to post. if you pay to renew your membership, you are purchasing the posting that comes with it. if you get a permaban in june, tough shit, you can't post for 6 months. if you get it in february, you can't post for 11 months. you get it in october, you can't post for the rest of the year.
i think this is fair. if someone gets to the end of their ban and chooses to renew, they renew. if they choose not to, then retire their username so that if they renew in 3 years they can't use the same one. i guarantee some people with lengthy bans won't come back. they will stay away on their own terms.
this place is kind of cliq-ish. when someone gets a permaban, often people that are friends with that person leave too. that damages the forum. people who are valuable contributors get angry and leave and don't come back. i have seen it happen a lot over the years.
i realize i sound like an old man when i talk about "the old days" before it became pay to post, but i really believe that it was a better forum back then. much more diverse. many different perspectives, and many more people from countries outside of the US.
another thing that tenclub can do, would be to simply create an "ignore list" or a "block feature" so people can ignore people that piss them off.

i have been kinda following that setlist. i am pretty stoked about this show. i have no specific expectations for friday night. i think everything is on the table, so i can't really rule anything out just yet. this band always surprises me by playing things i don't expect to hear. friday i am just going to hang out at the preparty and mingle with the people that are gonna be there. then i will go in after doors open and hang out in ga and just take it all in. i am pretty thankful that they are coming to me and that i don't have to go to them this time. i just hope my city doesn't disappoint those that are making the trip.rr165892 said:

personally, i am kind of over politics right now. i feel like i have already posted everything i have to say about the active topics on the first page. the same ones we always talk about. guns, war, occupation, climate change, cops, etc. i have said it all before.
i am tired of arguing, and if i can avoid it, these days i choose to avoid it.
But since this is a Pearl Jam site, and it is 48 hrs until the St.Fuckin Louis show you should be jacked up and maybe head over to the porch to follow what tonight's set list is in Cincy so we can rule out what we will get on Friday.I am expecting big things from your city.I want Beer,BBQ and Rock n Roll.
it is gonna be a friday in st louis. there is plenty of joy to be had, and plenty of trouble to get into, if you know where to look for it"You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

Brian, none of us need to justify responding to one topic and not another. Won't/can't speak for anyone else, but sometimes I read something and feel I have nothing of substance to contribute (in terms of posting...may have a thought or two but not worth spitting it out). That's not tantamount to apathy. Also, some topics don't light my fire; no apologies for that.
I guess I just post when I want to, and on what I want to. Don't most of the folks here do the same?
gimme, good idea (though I believe the ignore feature is already in place - never felt the need to use it).
Last week was my 15-year anniversary of my beginning within the "old days" of this community. Loved them and all they brought me - but I also like the now.

i could be wrong, but i don't see an ignore feature.
the old board had the friends and foes thing that worked pretty well."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."0 -
I'm puzzled by how a "friends and foes" or "ignore" feature would work (but then I'm not very social-media savvy). If you "ignore" posts by certain posters, don't you lose the point of the thread, and the reason for others' responses?my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0

the way it worked was, you can put someone on your "foe" list and you could not see their posts. that person would post and it would tell you that someone you blocked posted, but you could not read the post. you could read it if someone "quoted" that post in their reply though. i guess that way you can read the reply, and if you wanted to see what the foe posted you could see it if you wanted to. it worked well for me. i had a couple people on there for a couple of weeks a couple of years ago."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

Ah, see! I never used it but based on various comments by posters and mods, I thought it was still in place.gimmesometruth27 said:i could be wrong, but i don't see an ignore feature.

Still, one can simply ignore by personal effort; don't need a technical feature for that. In fact, doesn't it strike anyone else as...I don't know, sad, odd, immature even?...that it would take a button vs will to do that?0 -
It doesn't happen much on this board, but on some other forums ALL THOSE IRATE POSTS IN CAPS WITH MANY EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!! get visually annoying, so it would be useful to block those outhedonist said:

when someone quotes your post, they are speaking directly at you. without an ignore feature, curiosity will make you read it, because that person might knowingly be baiting you or pushing your buttons. when you are in a heated conversation, it is nearly impossible to not read what someone says to you. sometimes you need the option of using technology to ignore someone.

Or just let loose on the keys and then save as a draft, walk away for a bit, and realize the spike in blood pressure or simple irritation just isn't worth it in the end. Also kind of self-amusing after the fact to read what I wrote but didn't post, and shake my head at myself.
But, I get what you're saying. Been heated too; to be devoid of button-reactions would make us robots.
(and, you and your curiosity would get along well with our cats)

The amount of whining over the banning of a guy that certainly had years of pushing the line and going over it daily is pretty amazing.
Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.hippiemom = goodness0 -
gimme, I'm liking your ideas. Your experience here is hugely valuable. As for being old- nawww- believe me, hahaha! Anyway, good show, man! Thank you!
H., I think you're awesome too! :-D
Ah shit, I think the world of all of you, even those I don't always agree with. Even those of you with whom I've tangled with big time. So what?! At least you're all here, you all give a shit. That's good enough for me. As for those who got the boot- I sincerely hope they come back. It's how we learned. If gotten the boot before, not here, but in other ways- really hard ways- and those mistakes helped me grow. No regrets, just learning and moving on.>-

Kinda to your point, there are some smart, good thinking educated folks on these boards.Sometimes just sitting back, chilling and taking it all in is very entertaining. Some peeps are so passionate about one thing or another.hedonist said:Brian, none of us need to justify responding to one topic and not another. If I can't debate on the level of knowledge,I usually will hold back as there is nothing to contribute. But truth be told some of the best discussions are ones where I learn a little something along the way,and I find the thread has more relevance as I become more dialed in.Does that make sense?

Grit was lost in January when we switched to the new board layout. I figure about 75% of regular posters dropped out over the first couple months of the rollout.
It also doesn't help that the ticket system has turned into a lottery thanks to the PJ20 saboteur. There is less incentive to renew, in my opinion.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0
