So I may not have a job after this tour.....
I let my boss know MONTHS ago that I would need some time off in October. At the time he said that there wouldn't be a problem, but today he told me that he didn't want to give me the extra time off. He said "there would be consequences" if I went anyway.
I don't yet know what those consequences will be, but I may or may not have a job when I get back....
So if you happen to know of any job opportunities, I may be available as of November 1st

i hope everything works out for you, and that you don't get fired. if you told them months ago and they granted it back then, they can't take it away now. you already made plans and spent hundreds of bucks on hotels, tickets, flights, etc. what kind of consequences can they threaten you with??
i changed jobs in july. at my prior job i had off for the st louis show, and moline, which i ended up losing the lottery but thought i could score a ticket and go anyway. i interviewed for my current job in may and in my interview, and again when i called them to accept the offer, they said that taking those 2 fridays would be fine. i put in a formal request for those 2 days over 6 weeks ago. 3 days ago i found out that i got 10/3 off, but did not get 10/17. good thing i did not get moline tickets or i would have been screwed.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, they said it was okay but when the time came to sign off, they said no

I only get two weeks off per year so I am definitely in the wrong line of work

Did you book specific days off at the time or did you only vaguely make a request for a few weeks in October? In most of my jobs I've had to be pretty precise. IE most of my jobs have had a formal vacation policy which requires booking in advance and choose exact days. Prevents overlap and crap like that.
Either way it sucks. When I was around 20ish I quite a job after a few months because the scheduling was crazy rigid. I don't ask for a lot of days off, but a day here and there to see a concert, I couldn't work a job that didn't let me do that.0 -

Dude, IMO, a couple of concerts aren't worth your job. Unless you have mad skills and you are in high demand in your occupation it's hard to find a job now a days.

If I told my wife I was going to the concerts and I didn't care if I lost my job.
I would be divorced and homeless.

I didn't book specific days, but that doesn't matter where I work because there is no overlap and I will have no trouble catching up once I get back. I will only be gone for 8 days. I don't think I would have trouble finding another job actually. I speak a few foreign languages and there is a lot of demand for that over here. All I can say is, always get it in writing.

This made me think of that stupid new commercial with the kids begging for "one more day" of vacation. I've seen a bit of press recently about how Americans don't use their vacation days even when they do get them - as though it's something people do by choice. Especially with bigger corporate companies trying to schedule time off is almost impossible. I know one guy who has to pick his days off for the whole year the first week of January. I've been at one place like that. A union plant. Had to pick them at the beginning of the year and started by seniority. Back in Germany, I had 25 days for vacation, 25 work days, so that was around 5 weeks off every year. I worked overtime a lot, so I had always more days to spend. This is how you can go and take three weeks off at a time (which I did for PJ20) and still have vacation days left. Now I am self employed, which allows to take time off whenever I want and can afford it. (Does have disadvantages too of course, with health care etc etc)gimmesometruth27 said:

I used to have 25 days as well, but then I moved to Mexico. Over here you work 6 days a week, and you start off with 6 vacation days. Then you get 2 extra days for each year you stay with the same company, until you get to 14. Then you stay at 14 for 5 years, and after that you get two more per year until you get to 21, and then you're stuck at that number forever.Leezestarr313 said:

that is well over a month, and is the most time off i have had in my career. what they didn't say is that i would be such an integral part that if i took a day off it would screw up the entire operation for a few days. they did not say it was going to be such a pain in the ass to get off and use that time. it has to be approved by the surgeon i work with, then our office manager, then hospital HR department, and finally the university HR department.
