Here's what I was writing about last night as I ran full speed out of my office
It was hot and probably a little too packed. Sound was great. Jesse Malin killed as an opener (including an absolutely insane version of Do You Remember Rock n Roll Radio). I was shocked at how long the line was to get in. The crowd right down front was all hardcore Gaslight fans, so it didn’t feel like this exclusive event from where I was. Because my friend works at JV we got to go around the back and the whole band was back there hanging out. Got to talk to Benny and Alex Levine a little and had a good back and forth with Andy Diamond, who is fucking awesome. He was cool as shit but was basically guarding Fallon from people, so we left him alone.
I think I said in a previous post how burnt out I thought the band was at the end of the last tour. I don’t think I ever saw them having more fun. ALL of the new songs sounded incredible and as far as being “different” they sounded like Gaslight songs. Alex Levine sang a lot of backup and harmonies which came off great, and Alex R played keyboards on a few songs (Underneath the Ground, Sweet Morphine and I think another) which is a new wrinkle. Fallon didn’t say too much, or at least things I remember, other than a few jokes like how the bathrooms in the building don’t give you diseases anymore and making fun of the fact that Ian Perkins isn’t allowed to talk and doesn’t understand baseball and American football.
I’d say though I was most blown away by Red Violins, Aint that a Shame and Helter Skeleton live.0 -

Really wish I could have gone last night. I was stuck in a 3 hr meeting when the email was sent out and by the time I responded of course missed out.
Been listening to the stream for a few days and I love the album. Not sure I get all the talk about this being so different. They already have changes their sound with each album. SOS is a bit punk, 59S has an old school feel, AS has a sort of southern rock feel and Hanswritten is more a modern/grungy sort of sounding record. This one sounds like a mixture of all of them with maybe a little bit of Horrible Crows vibe on some stuff. But it really is not a huge departure. Some really good stuff on this record and I am sure once the actual vinyl and download arrives and I can really listen (been mostly listening as i work) this is going to really grow on me. Amazing band. They NEED to play CT, I dont think they have ever played here!!!0 -

Well the fact that it's better than LB isn't exactly saying much. I wouldn't put it in my top 5 over the last year but it's certainly right outside. I think it's their most important album to date and especially when you look back this will be the turning point.Post edited by 63schoefflin on'08- Camden 1-2 '09- Chicago 2; Spectrum 1-4

To each is his own. People feel differently when they hear songs, so I'm not suprised. Def in my top 5.63schoefflin said:Well the fact that it's better than LB isn't exactly saying much. It was a great time. In my opinion, the new songs are much much better live, mainly because it "sounds like them" if that makes any sense. To me whoever produced this album seemed to want to make them sound like a different band on a lot of songs. I was very impressed. A lot of passion came through live that is hard to see listening to the album.FrankieG said:Very cool, wish I went but I'll see most of these in September, hopefully.
How many people were there? What kind of banter/stories did Brian tell between songs?
The show/environment itself was a little odd. Sure, it was CBGB, but if you'd ever been to the actual CBGB like I had a few times it was very strange. They packed way too many people in there. Me being one of them I don't mind admitting that. Once you got 3-4 feet inside the door it was nearly impossible to move from there. The music/stage banter was nearly inaudible from there as well. IN order to hear anything, you had to fight your way at least past the bar. For example, The 59 Sound was playing while I was in the back and I didn't recognize it until about half-way through. Crazy for such a small space to have such limited sound. What didn't help matters is that there were mobs of people who were there who didn't care if they were there or not and weren't interested in the band at all and just talked, talked, and talked more. Needless to say, the back section near the front door was just an awful spot to be. Was infinitely better once devising a plan to move closer in where one could actually hear the music. There wasn't much stage banter I think mainly because it was a short set and their time was probably limited. It was a pretty awesome experience, and the open bar was pretty awesome (although they gave you drinks in baby cups so you had to order 3 drinks to get a normal sized drink). 1000 Years and Dark Places were just simply incredible.
