Blasted Sink or Swim on the way to work. Still my favorite TGA record, but wow the first 3 from Get Hurt are so different.

I'm surprised by the mixed reaction to stay vicious on the gaslight boards

My 2nd favorite song! Only behind Say I Won't (Recognize). :)
(Maybe We Came To Dance is #1 now since I have heard it live and I don't think I will hear Say I Won't live for awhile....) :((

I love all 3. Stay Vicious though is blowing my mind. This is definately the different direction they were talking about.

The tempo change, the solo, the lyrics. Just wow.

To me Rollin and Tumblin was not that off from traditional Gaslight and Get Hurt has a Horrible Crowes vibe. This song is totally new territory.

Stay Vicious is awesome...can't stop listening to it. 3 completely different songs so far and I'm loving all 3. God I cant wait for this album...haven't been this excited for a new album in a long time.
Yeah, I haven't been this excited for an album since Lightning Bolt :))
I love all 3 but I think Get Hurt is still #1 over Stay Vicious by a very small margin.

You need to listen to more albums then! Ha.

I used to love them sooo much. I listened to Sink Or Swim and Senor And The Queen all the time when they came out. Then I saw them live with about 20 people and Brian cried because we were all singing along to their songs. After 40 minutes they did an encore and had to play a song they already played before, because they already played every song they had. It was awesome!
The more famous they became the more dislikable and arrogant Brian seemed to me. Especially after what he said about people requesting songs at concerts and playing covers.
I like everything they put out before Handwritten.

I'm asking that if anyone would like to come to [our] show, please come because you want to see what we're doing on that night. Don't come to hear a cover, it probably won't happen. Don't come to yell at me when I'm trying to share something with the audience to reach out to them about something I feel is moving me.....

To the spiteful reviewers… just remember no one’s singing for you.

I’m asking openly and humbly that if anyone would like to come to a Gaslight Anthem show, please come because you want to see what we’re doing on that night. Don’t come to see Bruce, he won’t be there. Don’t come to hear a cover, it probably won’t happen. Don’t come to yell at me when I’m trying to share something with the audience to reach out to them about something I feel is moving me. For some reason I’m the one with microphone, which may be a mistake entirely. But if you want one and have something to say, please start a band, get in the van, sleep on floors, and work your butt off and maybe one day I’ll find your band and I’ll come see you play.

Why are they playing cover songs then?

I'm pretty sure I was at the show that caused that statement. I would think Brian would probably take most of that back now or probably reword it if he had a chance.

The crowd sucked and was very rude. I personally think that they over toured for Handwritten and were road weary by then.

There whole career they have paid tribute to their heroes musically and lyrically. The 59 sound album is obviously riddled with references to all kinds of bands, songs and even specific lyrics. Personally I think that's what makes that album great but what it did was force comparisons to all those groups in pretty much every interview and review they get.

Bruce showed up at their Asbury Christmas show once and now everyone thinks everytime they play NJ he will be there. That would annoy me too.

I think he just wants the band to stand on its own and it gets frustrating. That's why they are specifically headed in another direction for this album.

I can certainly see someone being turned off by those comments though. Remember though guys like Jack White and Ryan Adams have done stuff like this their whole careers. It's doesn't mean they still aren't great. Hey, even Ed wasn't always the happy cell phone stealing selfie taking guy he is now.

He has to learn that not everything they record is gold. If you have such success with what you do, you have to be prepared that you'll also get bad reviews and that not everyone is pleased with your work.

To the spiteful reviewers… just remember no one’s singing for you.

After Handwritten I don't expect anything great from them, but I will give it a try anyway.

I take it that you did not like Handwritten?
Have you heard the 3 singles for Get hurt? I love them but they are definitely different than anything they have done in the past, which I think is going to be a big/great step for them.

Isn't Rollin and tumbling a cover? Me could've sworn this is a song already somewhere? Maybe just the title?

Handwritten had a few great songs on it, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first three records.
Let's say that Handwritten just wasn't my cup of tea.

I heard the new ones. They're quiet good and totally different from anything before.
What I really appreciate about Gaslight Anthem is that they found they're own unique sound and every record was diffrerent. It goes from Punkrock (Sink Or Swim) to Pop (Handwritten). There's for sure no lack of creativity. I think it's great how a band can evolve but remain true to their sound.

I love them for "We Came To Dance".

Yeah I get the not your cup of tea thing. I think this new record will be thier best evolution yet.

I completely agree, We Came To Dance is only beaten by 'Say I Won't' in my book.

I have it on excellent authority that Gaslight will be playing John Varvatos Boutique in the Bowery (the old CBGB) on 8/7.

These are usual invite only shows but they also always have contests to get people in, so keep your eyes open if in the area.

I'll be there and have a full report.
