TOOL is the biggest example of bandwagon jumping I've ever seen. People like them because it makes them look deep, intelligent and hardcore. I've never understood one lyric on a tool album. They are horribly mixed and drone on one chord.

Regardless of how the interview portrayed this band or that band, that is the opinion I have on tool.

Also, I don't know who marc maron is. The amount of D-list comedians who have podcasts is a joke in and of itself.

What bandwagon has Tool jumped on and how?

It doesn't bother me when someone doesn't like a band that I do - to each their own - but to make sweeping statements that those who listen to them do so for purposes of appearance and self-elevation? Pretty silly and far-fetched.

Meh... To each his own... Even Nickelback and Creed resonate with some people... :-/

Slow your roll. This band is as musically creative as any. The only characteristic Tool fans share is patience. Not necessarily the time between albums...but to be able to listen to 7-9 minute songs making up the majority of an album. You will not find some pop chorus keeping you hooked.

If you are looking for lyrics you can look at the song 10,000 Days released almost 15 years after there first EP, this song still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. Hard to find a band that can still do it after so many years. Pearl Jam too.

Well said! 10,000 Days (both song & album) is one of my favorites. The song, its lyrics, brought comfort to my husband when his mother died - she and Judith Marie shared many qualities.

    Cheers.

Yup. Not one "Yah. Yah. Yah." (like the The Fixer) in their catalogue.

Now don't get me wrong. PJ is my favourite bands the majority of the year, but I offered what I have to counter the smug dismissal of one of my other favourite bands. And I don't like them to be deep or hard core... I like them becaus etheir music sounds really great when it's played loud.

I had never really heard Bad caompany so I looked them up on youtube.
For some reason it wasn't very appealing to listen any further, but the song I heard sounded nothing like Ten.

Tool also puts on one of the greatest live shows. So amazing to see and hear.

So Maynard might think PJ reminds him of Bad Company. Not that long ago people compared Creed to PJ. Bad Company is an improvement.

I just hear a drone and unintelligible lyrics that are buried in the mix. Musically they bore me. Just my opinion.

Everyone is a Tool fan because if you don't like them their army of fans will chastise you.

Can we keep in mind that Maynard just laughed at the comment? No disparaging. Jeebus. Much as I love Pearl Jam and the significant impacts they and their music have had on my life...they're a band, not my fucking children.

And Mr. Maron is entitled (as are we all, as evidenced by this and many other threads) to make judgments upon an initial listen (which is what I assumed was meant by the paraphrased comment in the OP).

I've never heard of Marc Maron. But I know I don't care if someone doesn't like Pearl Jam. Hell, I don't like plenty of bands that other love. Rolling Stones - blah. Arcade Fire - average at best. DMB - simply awful. Phish - annoying music (cool fans though). And I don't like rap in general. Or country music (excluding the Man in Black). I am pretty sure that the fans of these don't give a flying fuck if I hate them, and in fact figure that it's my loss. So.... your loss Marc Maron, whoever you are. :P (but Bad Company? Seriously? That comparison makes no sense at all).

Maron said something along the lines of when he heard the first Pearl Jam album, he thought "Great, Bad Company is back together". Both men enjoyed a laugh over this.

if marc maron had interviewed ed and made the same type of joke about tool, does anyone think ed would have had a good laugh?

Depends on how Ed feels about Tool I guess.... more likely he'd be laughing about how Marc Maron thinks Tool sounds like Bad Company. :D;)
(really though.... PJ doesn't sound like Bad Company AT ALL. I don't get it... just me?)

I'm actually happy that people get joy out of anything, assuming it's not hurtful to others. I'm glad for the Nickelback and Bieber and Creed fans, and glad for Nickelback and Creed for having any fans.... Bieber can go to hell though, hahaha.

AND I'll say that while I'm not a big Bad Co. fan, Paul Rodgers kicked some beautiful ass when he performed with Queen. Guy's got a decent voice.

(I too don't get that musical comparison, PJ_Soul...and agreed on the stupida-fucking-board comment, shortstack; editing has become my nemesis :D )

Not directed at OP but rather the talking heads mentioned....

Despite the fact that trying to squeeze bands in to genres is sort of pointless...Yeah um..."rock" = 50+ years "grunge" = died at the ripe old age of what, 7?

Quite honestly I think Pearl Jam would be honored to NOT be classified/defined as grunge. "Grunge"...also known as that genre that was actually pretentious because it superficially tried so hard not to be. I don't know.... to me the minute that one musician starts worrying about whether another musician conforms to some fucking artificial ideal is the minute I realize that the first musician is pathetic, fake, and lacks confidence.

so Tooly's (I am certain this is not a term commonly associated to a group of Tool Fans but what the hell),

I have one tool record (the one with the googles built into the case) - I recall thinking it was OK, didn't blow me away. Tell me, is there an essential tool record I must own? Im open to new stuff, and will go and grab it

Aenima is a great record Paul and Lateralus which came next was really good too. The one you have didn't break any new ground for them and although a lot more technically avanced than many other bands efforts it was poorer by their standards. I do like a lot of it though. Most people will say Aenima for the essential album and it does deserve the acclaim but Lateralus is my favourite as it feels more fluent. Headphones should be worn where possible... 8-X
