    Selfishness blinds people to what is good for society and all be damned if the whole country goes to shit as long as they get theirs. Hope the mom and kids move cause next time they’re coming in blazing.

    As to arming the whole population, well I drive with my fellow citizens, stand behind them in fast food lines, rock out with them at concerts and sorry, 95% can’t handle the responsibility of gun ownership.

    May take a while, but as people that desire guns have a higher chance of dying by guns, Darwinism will ultimately remove the fear gene from the pool.

    I am glad it worked out for this woman, but if my safest option is to have a shotgun in the house (anyone know if this woman's was locked up?), I'll take my chances unarmed. I couldn't live with myself if my need to gun up caused a tragedy.

    they need to teach self defense in PE class in schools. that is all there is to it. i had a few mma fights in 2008 and 2009. before 2007 i had always run from a fight. there has to be a better way of protecting ourselves.

    I like this idea. Everything should not be about living in fear and relying on firearms as the only weapon for defense.

    I'm all for gun control. But this woman seems to be a responsible gun owner. Which made all the difference here between life and death for both the assailants and the victims.

    Here's the thing... stories like this can easily go either way... hero or villian.
    This is a story of a hero... where the gun owner is there to protect children. But, there are stories where the gun owner is the villian... such as this one:

    I guess my point is, we can credit some people and blame others regarding the presence of guns in households with children. No matter how well we plan to train our kids of the dangers of guns and teach gun safety (reference Adam Landza), the fact remains, as long as humans remain in the equation, errors are a great probability.
    This original story would have never been posted is the story went the other way and one of the children brought the gun to school. In that case, the mother would not be held as a hero, right?

    And I suppose another point is this... these types of stories support neither side of the gun debate. They are alll anecdotal, at best. For every story that is brought about that supports one side... there is another story to counter it... regardless of which side you support. Gun supporters will only present those stories that support their side of the arguement and gun control advocates willl only provide stories that support their view. The rest of us need to take them all for what they are worth.

    I'm taking this one for what it's worth, to me - a very isolated success story for the gun fondlers, an outlier.

    My neighbor's mother was telling me how the 2 year old knows that there is a gun located in their hallway coat closet. And that it's loaded. She then mentioned to my neighbor how they need to move the gun immediately and not to let the kids know where. It's so uncomforting to know that the 2 year old knows how to get to a gun...

    I'll probably be up at 2 am worrying about that 2 year old... it's what I do
    when my kids first started going to their friends' houses I felt like I couldn't stop giving them the "gun talk" over and over and over (as in, if little Johnny says there's one in the house he wants to show you, run out of that house as fast as you can and call me) ....
    kids are curious and guns are pretty fascinating to most of them

    Good luck raising your child with such variables that ultimately are out of your control.

    You can't keep your kid in a bubble... and you can't keep your kid from falling into contact with morons. It's a freaking crapshoot.

    Agreed, it's all out of our control.... had to give up that illusion early on or I would've been over the edge by now. That Columbine & 911 one-two punch made it sink in pretty quickly.

    those kids were not taught a single thing about guns


    in this story i don't consider the mom really a hero at all. she did her thing by running some young punks out of her home.
